The only department that's positive with this DVD is the audio, which highlights the cool score. The picture quality is a horror at times, with too many marks and similar flaws in an image that's rarely clean looking and not sharp. Probably the worst looking image quality for a new release that I've seen in a long time.
The movie itself is no treat, either. I found it to be a boring and empty drama with little chemistry or spark from its stars.
There's a commentary, but I don't recommend it. Director John McTiernan sounds like he's either really bored or recording the commentary at 3am. There's some interesting insights, but you have to get through a lot of pauses where there's no comments and a lot of comments that are only mildly interesting. In other words, definitely avoid this one. If you want to read the full review, visit my site below.

The Thomas Crown Affair was one of my favorite movies of '99. I've had this one pre-ordered for over a month already. I already own the original on DVD and can't wait to add this great remake to my collection. Hopefully my copy won't have the video problems yours did (are you sure yours isn't defective)?

I am in agreement with DVDRules1 about the quality of the movie. I have not seen the DVD (and will not), but I did see the movie in the theater. This was a terrible movie. As I stated before in a previous review, Rene Russo mind was engaged somewhere other than on the set. It was one of the poorest acting performances I have witnessed.

Rene Russo? What mind? have you ever seen an
interview with her? I've never seen someone
so out there.(well, then there's Ferrah
)Her acting ability isn't why she gets into
movies.

I liked this movie too, 3 out of 4 stars. It had too much emphasis on stars, sets and costumes, and not enough story, but it was an enjoyable movie.
I'll rent this one first to check on the DVD quality.

An enjoyable movie for me. Not sure i'd want to own it...not a lot of replay value to it, but a nice flick to watch all around!

I acutally triple posted above too, but you can delete your posts (hint, hint). Just edit the offending post and click the delete post button. Quite easy and reduces clutter.
I'm disappointed to hear that this DVD has such a poor transfer, but I guess I'll have to see for myself when I get it in a couple days. I just loved the movie. It did a great job of blending the music with a fast paced plot.

Yep, here's another vote for "I loved it". Great soundtrack too. I really felt this was a fun and delightful film. There was real chemistry between Brosnan and Russo, and they completely fooled me with the ending.
By the way, the movie got quite a high tomato mark on RottenTomotoes:

I'm sincerely hoping that you are wrong about the image quality. That would be a shame. It looked great in the theatre.

I have to say i liked the movie in the theater. I just received my shipping notice from REEL so I am hoping the video quality is not as bad as reported.

Just got mine today. Although I haven't had time to watch the whole thing I skipped through several chapters and the video looks good to me. If it has any problems it would probably be isolated to a few certain scenes. I liked the movie and was surprised when I found out how many didn't like it. I think it's worth picking up, I always prefer to trade away than rent.

Received the DVD and watch the movie this evening. Although I somewhat enjoy the movie, I would not recomend anyone buying the DVD. This is a renter and not a keeper.
Reasons:
1. Image transfer very average.
2. Sound is below my standard. (guess I am spoiled with the Matrix and Fifth Element)
3. Director's commentory horrible. Too many quiet gaps between comments. The mono-tone made it a tortue to listen to.
4. No chemistry between the leading characters.
I must give that the movie had its moments. However, most of the time, I keep thinking that it could have been better. So much potential.... Pierce B. did a great job here. However, although I am a fan of Rene R., she was horrible here.

Weird... I thought the image was among the ten best of the 300+ DVDs I own! I noticed no pixelation, shimmer or video noise of any sort--even in the tough flying scenes over foliage(I actually looked hard for it and expected it in this sequence). I thought it looked rather 3D like at times! The sharpness was excellent without any over enhancement. The menu's were pretty cool and I saw some shimmer there(when it panned) but that was it!
The audio was well done as well. Mostly a dialog movie but the subtle effects were excellent. I really enjoyed Sting's remake of the original theme at the end and the whole musical score. I haven't seen the original film but, overall I enjoyed this movie and it was a DVD worth buying.
For reference, I have a ISF calibrated 56" 16x9 HD-RPTV with an external line doubler and a Pioneer DV-09 player.
