This is available for preorder at $17.99 but will jump to $20.99 when it is released next Tuesday. I recall reading good reviews of this film. Anyone seen it? Worth owning for repeated viewing, or is this more a one-shot rental type film?

I've ordered it to keep. It's got a tour-de-force performance by Jack Nicholson and emotionally resonant direction and writing from Sean Penn. Bring a hanky!

I was pretty disappointed when I saw this a few years back. Jack Nicholson did a good job acting, but I just didn't think it was a great movie. 2.5 out of 4 stars, I say.
It is quite depressing (not the reason I don't like it)

I was disappointed too. Like "The Indian Runner, Penn's previous attempt at writing and directing the movie has potential, but never quite reaches the heights it should (though I think that "Indian Runner" is the better film of the two). I believe that Penn has it in him to write and direct a good movie, but it will take a few more tries for him to get it right. Also, though Nicholson put in one of his better performances in recent memory, I feel that David Morse was the highlight of the film.
