"analyze this" worth buying?

I would suggest renting almost any movie before you buy, but maybe thats just because I rent a lot of movies and only buy a few.
But, I do think that Analyze This was a very funny movie and it is in my collection.

I would definitely recommend renting this one first. My wife and I did not find it even remotely as good as we were led to believe. All of our friends raved about it, but we found it to be a very mediocre comedy with only a few cute moments (most of which are included in the trailer).

Being a huge fan of the Deniro/Pesci couplings in Goodfellas and Casino (not so much in Raging Bull), I felt that this movie was a must-see in that Bobby D is the quintessential mobster/gangster actor. The movie opened with Deniro narrating to give us the setup for the rest of the movie and it really had the feel of a bonafide Deniro/Pesci gangster movie.
However, imo the premise of this movie did not lend itself to those previous character depictions (noted above) we've seen Deniro play. I don't know about others, but I was absolutely cringing during the scene where he was crying (very poor acting imo) in the mermaid bar. I did not believe that Paul Vitti was truly distraught. It appeared to be faked for comedy schtick value. Deniro has played ruthless, heartless, killers (2nd only to Pesci in brutality), and it just really affected me like nails on a chalkboard to see this character act like a big baby. I did not believe that Paul Vitti was capable of hurting anybody.
I'm really conflicted because if they had cast someone other than Deniro, I would have been thinking "Man, they should have gotten Deniro". But, even so, the role of Paul Vitti was just way to wussy. I kept wanting Joe Pesci to save this movie by jumping into a scene and start slapping Vitti around, start throwing the m/f word around, and question which set of genitals he had between his legs.
Thumbs are sideways from me on this one.

thegord . . .

That's some great analysis!!!
I also felt really awkward watching Robert DeNiro play such a wimp . . . Joe Pesci does need to come and slap him around . . . so does Dennis Leary!!!
Although the movie had some hilarious moments, I wasn't convinced by the whole story. Due to some great reviews and the movie's popularity, I've been meaning to give it another chance, but just haven't gotten around to watching it again. I believe I was tired during the initial viewing, so I will definitely give this another try. If I still feel the same disappointment, look for me in the "Trade" forum.

Rent it first. The premise is cute, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. It felt like after they dreamed up the premise no one could be bothered to do a rewrite on the script.
The premise is cute, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. DeNiro acts like he thinks he's funny, which is the kiss of death in a comedy.

absolutely, you should buy this movie! It was the funniest film I saw all year. The plus is...with repeated viewings, it's still very funny! The outtakes alone are worth the price of the disc!

I was in the same "should I rent it or buy it boat", so I decided to use one of my free netflix rentals on it. How glad I am. It's not a horrible movie, and it has it's moments, but it left alot to be desired. It seemed like it never hit it's peak. Based on the difference of opinions, the smart person would rent it first...
Even if I'd spent only $10 shipped on it, I'd be trying to trade it right now.
It's funny, though, I'm a pretty big DeNiro fan and almost hate Billy Crystal, but I thought Billy was quite good in it and DeNiro wasn't. Go figure...
