Request:Dirty Dancing CE?

This is a GREAT DVD. I pre-ordered it from CDNOW, and received it on the 19th. I've since watched it about three times, and played with the special features for hours. The sound and video quality are both top notch. Music is vital to this motion picture, and Artisan really got it right with this release. No noticeable differences in quality with the original release, but remember that that release was the 1997 digiatlly remastered theater print, so the quality is high to begin with.
Special features are where this DVD definately stands out. Its menu system is similar to that of the Matrix, with moving images and sound, with the menus incorporated around that.
Features:
Commentary by the creator Eleanor Bergstein - lots of info!
Making of Featurette and Production Notes
Music Videos for The Time of My Life, Hungry Eyes, and She's Like the Wind.
Cast and Crew biographies and filmographies
The full 90 minute "Dirty Dancing: Live in Concert" that was originally televised in 1988. This is great for fans of the music, as most of the songs from both soundtracks are there, and a CD of this program's music was even released.
It also has the original Trailer
Considering that both DVD's are the same price, and you can get it for $9.50 shipped from CDNOW (using a $10 coupon), I think that it is definately worth a buy.

I guess this is a minor thing for most people but this comes in a keepcase. I believe the older version came in a snapper case. Also this came with a "Artisan Buy One Get One Free" coupon on the front of the keepcase.

Does anyone know if the "Dirty Dancing" in the Artisan "Buy 1/Get 1 Free" offer is the CE or the original version?
I'm supposing it's the original, but I just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure.

The picture on the Buy 1 Get 1 insert shows the original release.
I scanned through this one briefly. The movie looks good, but those music videos look like they were taken off of a BAD VHS tape or something...not much as far as quality, but it's nice to have them on there at least.

consoleman: I got one of the Buy one Get one coupons on the outside of my Dirty Dancing CE, so I assume it qualifies.
drh4: I was very disappointed with this DVD. As Mr.Finch noted, the music videos are the worst looking transfer that I have ever seen on ANY DVD. I am shocked that they were actually included in such horrible condition. Is "She's Like the Wind" actually supposed to have pink and blue lines down the center?
I thought that there was something wrong with my player.
The "Live in Concert" is pretty lame. The Behind the Scenes bits are okay, but very short.
Worst of all, this version does not have the basic features from the original version. There are NO English captions or subtitles. The old version had both audio and subtitles in three languages: English, Spanish, and French. I've actually enjoyed watching parts of this movie in French. The old version also had the 1997 rerelease trailer - not included on the CE.
The Commentary with the writer was an unexpected bonus, and it's the main reason that I am not selling off this DVD immediately. However, she does get a little tedious. She has to note whether the scene was filmed in North Carolina or Virginia in EVERY scene. Enough already! Also, I enjoy commentaries more with the subtitles on so I can watch the movie. But there are no subtitles.
Dirty Dancing is one of my favorite movies, so I think that I will be keeping both versions. However, if you don't already own this movie on DVD I would recommend the old snapper case version of this disc over the new "Collectors" version. The CE makes a good rental, just to hear the commentary once.

Sounds like a great disc, guys. Too bad I already own the original DVD.
However, the transfer and sound of the movie itself is always the most important aspect of a DVD, in my opinion, so I'll stick with the copy I own . . . since the transfer is identical. If the SE was anamorphic, then that would be another story.

Glennica: Yes, the Dirty Dancing CE should be one of the qualifying ones for the "Buy 1/Get 1" free offer.
I wish I read some more of your reviews first, because I have recently placed an order for the CE version, and passed on getting the original version for free from the Artisan offer. I sort of regret it now.
I really like the music from this movie a lot, and was hoping that at least the concert footage came out OK on the DVD if not the music videos themselves. Oh well, I guess I have to live with it.

thanks for the reviews guys. now i know to just get the old edition from the free artisan offer instead of forking over the cash for the CE.
