This movie is one of those people love or hate. So you've probably preordered it, or just forgotten about it. On rewatching (the extra 9min version), the movie is well paced and still entertaining. The extra footage is hardly noticable and does not detract or enhance the movie appreciably.

This time around they got it right, well almost. BOTH the theatrical release and the "special edition" films are on the disc. Whether they used seamless branching to add the extra 9mins or just have 2 copies of the movie on the disc, I don't know. In any case the transfer is excellent, but those with 16:9 TV's will notice the lack of an anamorphic version. Why every DVD pressed nowadays isn't anamorphic is beyond me!

The sound is excellent presenting a very dynamic & directional rear stage. Picture quality is near perfect with occassional graininess showing through during the sandstorm and some desert scenes....but then again one would expect graininess during a sandstorm

With the bargain prices available, time to eBay that old copy and upgrade.

IMHO,

Smeg

Smeg,

The reason the film isn't anamorphic is that Artisan couldn't afford (or at least they couldn't justify the expense of) a new transfer. Sure, they could take the existing tranfer and digitally expand it anamorphicly, but it would not look any better, and might in fact look worse. I guess that Artisan just figured that the money spent on a new transfer would not be recouped through additional sales.
