Saw it for the first time last night and
This movie should have never been made.
What happen to Mr. John Carpenter?
Bad storyline, characters flaws w/ the main
characters & THE DIALOG!!!..It's bad enough when John Wood curses out a priest, but does every other word has to be f**king, s**t, or motherf**ker....who was the screenplay writer on this movie?...Redd Foxx!! Couldn't get connected with this movie. IT'S JUST PLAN AWFUL!!!!

I saw this one in the theater...there was one good line in there...something like "Excuse me, my nuts are on fire here!" Was I the only one who thought that was funny?

It was just a fun horror/action film with an interesting concept(Special Vampire Unit from The Vatican).

A friend of mine saw this twice in the theater because he loved it so much. So I figured I'd pick up the DVD thinking it'd be worth a try. Well to put it nicely, I traded the DVD promptly after viewing it.

Ipersonally liked this film when I saw it the theaters, when i got the DVD it's a different experience. The commmentary is pretty bad too. Although I think it's still Carpenter's best since Big Trouble in Little China.

This thread seems to illustrate that even among the most loyal Carpenter fans, there is absolutely no consensus as to which of his movies are good, and which suck. My personal feelings are that I have not felt really good about any of his movies for the last 10 years or so, but I usually see them anyway, just out of habit. I, like most fans hold The Thing and the original Escape From New York in the highest regard, but I stir up disagreement when I say that my favorites also include Big Trouble In Little China, They Live and Christine. It distresses me greatly that so many people I know have seen the awful Escape from LA since it's widely available, without seeing or even being aware of the original! I didn't find much of anything to like about Vampires, and like others have said, his tired commentary track seems to show that he doesnt like it much either. I wish he'd make something that really makes a step forward in the horror-sci-fi genre again.

In my opinion, I didn't think the movie was that bad. I think the reason I enjoyed it was that Columbia/Tri-Star did an excellent job with the transfer and DD 5.1.

Basically, I didn't take "Vampires" too seriously . . . I never take James Woods seriously. I usually enjoy vampire movies and this was no exception. It kept my interest throughout and the picture and sound added to my pleasure.

I guess I would list it as a "guilty pleasure" as well. It`s certainly no classic, but just plain dumb fun. Besides, I pretty much like anything James Woods does.

CADMAN1 with ALL due respect anything with CRONENBERG'S name on it SUCKS TO HIGH HEAVEN.

There is high art, crap, and Cronenberg in that decending order.

Okay Giantrobo, that was way outta line. Some of us happen to like Cra...Cronenberg films. His filmaking talents have declined in recent years too, just not at the breakneck speed of Carpenter. Also Cronenberg is easier to defend because he doesn't make fodder for the masses. I had to go to an art-house (or crap house) to see Existenz, which wasn't bad at all. Too bad the DVD's gonna be Buena Vista sans extras. Give me serious stories with original ideas and the fine performances of Videodrome (yes, Woods' best movie) or Scanners or Dead Zone anyday over run-of-the-mill wink-at-the-camera Vampires.

No offense taken, Giantrobo. You are usually a gentleman. I know you'd hate that.
