An excellent DVD as expected from MGM. This DVD is loaded with material. Before I get to that though I'll start with the tranfer. The video could have been better with some slight grain. The night scenes are dark but, I've seen it like this on all the prints. All in all this is still the best way to see the film. The audio isn't very full but, is loud where it should be. The bonus stuff is where the disc really shines. This disc was made witht the Phantasm fan in mind as there is a whole bunch of unadvertised features. The known features are the commentary with Don Coscarelli, Reggie Bannister, Angus Scrimm, Michael Baldwin, and Bill Thornbury(which is entertaining but is the same as the laserdisc release a few years ago), 10 minutes of deleted footage, 1979 T.V. interview, original mono sountrack with new 5.1, trailer, t.v. and radio spots, behind the scenes footage, still gallery, and a booklet. Wait there's more!!! On top of that stuff I was surprised to see some stuff that wasn't on the package like the behind the scenes footage has commentary by Don Coscarelli and Reggie Bannister, Audio only extras with the full song in the movie performed by Bill Thornbury and a disco version of the main theme, a funny Australian promo featuring Angus Scrimm, a Fangoria T.V. commercial with Scrimm in his Tall Man character, and a footage of Scrimm addressing his crowd at a Fangoria Convention. Whew!!! Suffice to say this is one packed DVD. For fans of the film this is a must buy, and for those that never see it, there is no better way to see this modern horror classic.

Thanks for the review. As a huge fan of the PHANTASM series, I am now salivating as I await my disc. Only if the damn campus mail system would get their act together and actually DELIVER the mail when it arrives instead of a few days (sometimes weeks) later. I know Amazon shipped my copy out Monday which means it should have arrived today (Amazon always gets my stuff here in less than 3 days, until now). Here's hoping someone didn't walk off with my mail again (this happened a few weeks ago when I got some import GAMERA videos from Japan).

Wow. This disc is incredible. Packed! Packed, I tell you. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was also loaded with extras, but Phantasm has some interesting selection ... especially the "1979 Interview with Don Coscarelli and Angus Scrimm" ... it's wonderful. It's this film professor quizzing them on what looks like public-access television. Really great.
I'd seen bits of the some of the Phantasm movies, and just got the disc because I felt like I should see the original. Loved the movie, and I'm exceedingly glad to have it in my library. -N!
