I've been sorta obsessed with this subject since I read the magnificent book "Into Thin Air" last year. I'm still waiting for that Imax doc. to be released on DVD. In the meantime, has anyone seen this disc yet? It looks to be a good deal(3 one-hour docs for $25), but I want to know if they are any good; and also how is the quality of the disc. It's published by a company called Goldhil Home Media, which doesn't instil me with much confidence. Still if the disc is good, I'll buy it. Let me know what you think.

Decker,
Finally I have met someone else. I read Into Thin Air last summer and it haunts me to this day. My birthday was yesterday and my fiancee bought me every book about that climb she could find, and the illustrated hardback of ITA! I saw the original IMAX picture and was very dissapointed, but I think this one is different. I am considering it myself. I am a bit confused, because in that film (in which a director's cut is showing in Chicago) Liam Neeson is the narrator. DVD Express lists Jodie Foster. Both appear to be by David Breshears (I now have his book!) who was on the mountain that fateful day and shot the mountain footage for Seven Years in Tibet.
If I buy it I'll let you know how it is. By the way, read Anatoli B's (I've drawn a blank on his last name) book "The Climb," which answers the charges that Krakauer made against him.

Bob,
Happy Birthday! Mine's next week. I was unaware of the book by Anatoli Boukreev. I'll look into borrowing it from the library (I still hold a grudge and don't want him getting rich off this tragedy). I'm sorry to hear that the Imax was disappointing, I've been looking forward to seeing it for over a year! I beleive the Jody Foster documentary was a different climb with Breashears and Rob Hall (!) that I saw on Nova (on PBS). It was very informative about the perils of high-altitude climbing; as well as being poingant in retrospect. Neither of these two docs are on the DVD. It contains three one-hour doc about Everest. One is about the history of the mountain, the second is about the sumer of '96 and the third is about Hillary's conquest. Again I haven't seen it, can't rent it or find anyone who has viewed it.
If anyone has watched it, please let me know what you think.

I don't really mean to be too blunt, but there is no possible way that Anatoli Boukreev can make a single penny off this book. Unfortunately he is dead.
Also, I have to admit that I had the same feelings about his actions on Everest that summer, but after reading The Climb my feelings changed. The book is actually written by G. Weston DeWalt (Boukreev does not speak English very well) and I think it does an excellent job in presenting what happened in a well-rounded non critical way. Unlike Krakauer who to this day tries to place the blame on people and refuses to consider certain facts of the story. This I must say is very unfortunate.
I don’t know if you know this or not but Boukreev was awarded the American Alpine Club's highest honor, the David A. Stowles Memorial Award, for what he did on Mount Everest in May of 1996. So some pretty important people don’t think he screwed up.
I also enjoy following what goes on in the mountaineering world…what can I say, its just pretty darn cool stuff.

I'm going to try one more time. Does anyone in this forum own this disc? I want to know how it is.
