Hello,
Can you let me know why someone would purchase this flick?
I'm not a big Keanu Reeves fan, but since it's gotten such HYPE on DVDTalk, I'd like to hear some reasons why I should buy at this great price?
Thanks, Dino

This is what Virgin.net here in the UK said about the Matrix, I'm sure they won't mind me putting it up here.
The brothers Wachowski follow 1996's lesbian heist-thriller Bound with this preposterous cyberpunk fantasy, proving once and for all that style and substance don't have to be mutually exclusive, and leaving film fans with their most burning question since: "Who is Keyser Soze?". So what exactly is the Matrix, then? Well, don't look at us to spoil it for you. We'll just say this: if you're into Cronenberg, black leather, film noir, Blade Runner, Alice in Wonderland, spiffy special effects, Jackie Chan, computer games, eXistenZ, hi-tech camp, Zen Buddhism, cartoons and dumb, beautiful movie stars with designer cheekbones, you must go and see this film. And if you're into none of the above, see it anyway. Either way, remember to pause and collect your jaw from the floor before you leave the cinema, and spare a thought for poor George Lucas's sleepless nights...

If you like Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell etc., you will like The Matrix. Although the story has a few holes (what movie doesn't) the special effects and the action are outstanding. This is a must own disc.

As much as I loved this movie myself, I'd hate for you to think that everyone loved this movie.
Some people think that it's a ripoff of a lot of other Sci fi flicks (like this never happens in other films
) and that took a lot away from the movie for them.
And then some people just weren't blown away by the special effects. Some of which aren't necessarily amazing so much as they are extremely cool!
Also, the story is a little twisty and confusing and if you miss some of the back story things stop making sense.
And the final scene was a little too Hollywood for some people, but I'm a hopeless romantic so it worked for me.
Perhaps the best way to put it is if the opening sequence doesn't make your jaw drop, this movie probably isn't for you.
Trinity Rocks!

I think my biggest issue with The Matrix DVD is those who haven't seen it on the big screen. This is THE big screen movie, and even if you have the best Home Theater System this side of George Lucas, you are not going to get the same effect as if you see it big, bold, and loud. This is my favortie Sci-Fi flick, and it is definately a visionary step in filmmaking (a $150 million movie made for only $60 million) and storytelling, but to see it for the first time on a (relatively) itty-bitty screen (Hey, I saw it at Mann's Chinese twice) then you are cheating yourself. I shudder to think of those people renting it on VIDEO (ack) watching it in P&S (double ack!).
This movie is worth buying, at just about any price (of course, the second that we plunk down $12 at wherever the best deal is, Criterion will come out with a three disc superset that everyone will be pissed about). And notice that this was the role that Keanu was born to play (Almost all of his lines are confused questions. Huh? What is happening? I don't understand! etc.) and he IS Neo. He had better not let this go to his head because he isn't exactly Edward Norton.

This is the only movie that I have seen in years that I walked out the theatre without any complaints. Don't get me wrong, there are a few holes, but I wasn't thinking about them right away, like I am with most movies.
As far as a lack of originality, that's a crock. Yeah, there are aspects or ideas that have been done before, but what movie doesn't do that? For me, the combination of themes was very unique and incredibly compelling.
I agree the Keanu Reeves is not the most versatile actor around (for that, Edward Norton comes to mind--it STILL blows my mind that it's this same guy in Rounders and American History X), but fortunately, this part was MADE for him! He has not had such a perfect role since Bill and Ted's...
I second the motion that you should first go see this in a theatre. I doubt you'll be disappointed. And then, buy a copy or three!
As for a Criterion Edition, I sure hope they get to do one. For me, this is one of those movies that I would be more than happy to own BOTH this first DVD and the Criterion. So far, I've done that only with Brazil.

I saw this at Mann's Chinese, too, and brought several friends who had not seen it yet, and weren't sure what they'd think. I had to scoop them up and carry them out myself. Great presentation. I wish I could build a theater like that on my own property. Would be nice to have property first.
