I just purchased and watched WHITE SQUALL on DVD, and I must say that is it a fantastic disc. First of all, the picture is great.. It is presented in it's widescreen format, and the transfer done for it is beautiful. The colors are rich, sharp and alive. As for the sound, equally granted a thumbs up. I listened to it using a Sony Dolby Digital receiver, and the sound is electrifying.
The extras are just your normal run of the mill stuff. Trailer, production featurette, and some reel recommendations. But if you are into a great looking, great sounding story.. This is the movie for you... Don't look for special effects, but look for real character development.. I have to say this is one of Jeff Bridges most under-rated movie...

sorry, but i have to disagree about the PQ of this DVD.
this non-anamorphic title was very soft and lacking detail. also displayed artifacts w/ the many lines of teh masts & rigging.
a pity, because the visuals are one of the main features of Scott's films
i had to shrink the size of the picture on my projection system from 9ft down to about 6ft to make it watchable.

This title is flagged correctly and when played on a JVC 723 or Panasonic R91 progressive scan player, the player will reformat the DVD to 16x9. There is a big improvement in picture quality. White Squall is an excellent letterbox DVD that is better than some title formated in anamorphic.

i've heard good things about the R91 (and related players like the Malata) that does the scaling in the digital domain.
i'm thinking about getting one of those players - hopefully it would become less necessary as the number of new-release non-anamorphic titles dwindles.
how big a difference do you see in digital vs. analog scaling of WHITE SQUALL? what is the size of your video display, and what is your viewing distance?
