I just ordered M today after watching it for the first time this week (VHS-99 minute version). Is the first five minutes in really bad shape or is it something you had to look hard for? (opening scene is obviously my favorite) I'll let you know what my copy looks like upon receiving it.

classic. I noticed the same thing. i recall reading somewhere (no idea where or how accurate) that the first portion of the movie came from a different source that the rest.
For anyone that has not seen the movie yet, it is a good onem worth picking up if you want a classic. Too bad there are not the usual Criterion extras in the disc though
