These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Re: "The Blackcoat's Daughter" Reviews/Discussion - 2020 Horror Challenge

Atmospheric but with glacieral pacing as painful as it was poetic. I am glad I got the chance to finally cross The Blackcoat's Daughter off my watch list. The stilted reserved manners of all actresses takes some getting use to and I wish there had been more change in the pacing/style during different points. The different timeframe mix wonderfully but it's always a bit vague what Joan is after (maybe she is just mental) - would not the parents know who killed their daughter?

I never realized that Oz Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins (of Psycho fame).
I think I liked I Am the Pretty Things That Lives in the House a better. Edit: Just watched Gretel & Hansel - think that might be his best film yet. Perkins is very good at mood and atmosphere and that's something that's sorely lacking in a lot of horror films these days.

I feel like I need to give this one another viewing. I wanted to like it more than I did, but something about it just didn't connect with me. I don't know. I kept feeling like I missed something. And then the slow pace had my mind wandering, so I might well have missed some things.

One of the best horror films of 2015. A well scripted and visually appealing film with characters that are multi-faceted. Highly recommended

I’ll admit when I saw the A24 logo I rolled my eyes. It seems I’m not a fan of most of their releases. This was ok. I love seeing James Remar in stuff. He will always be Ajax the Warrior to me.

When I saw this back in 2015, I found the secondary timeline confusing as hell. It was good to rewatch it knowing what that was all about. I agree with others that the pacing dragged in spots. I liked the boarding school setting and the lead actresses. 7/10 for me.

Completely love this movie. I too was totally confused the first time I saw a couple years ago. I enjoy a slow burner when its dripping with atmosphere like this one does. Also love that it's directed by Norman Bates' Son.
Excellent choice hbsvb!

Loved this film. Could have left out all the horror/murder and been an emotional study of loneliness and loss, but the genre elements gave it some shocks and a wonderful overall dread.

This is one of my favorite viewings of the challenge, and I've seen it 3 times. I love the slow development, and 3 stories told out of linear narrative. Kat cries a the end because the devil has left her for good and she really is alone. I love the atmosphere of this movie.
