DVD Talk review of 'King Kong (1933)' (Blu-ray)

I read Stuart Galbraith IV's DVD review of King Kong (1933) at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=44163 and... one thing that irks me about most of the reviews of this blu-ray release of KING KONG, is that the film's age is brought up apologetically regarding the disc's expectant quality. Why does KING KONG get singled out this way? There are other films older than KONG out on blu-ray that don't have as much attention given to their age. I mean, it's not like we're talking about George Melies' A TRIP TO THE MOON from 1902.

It's due to the movie's popularity. Way more people will come to this disk thinking it had better look great simply because it's King Kong, a monumentally popular film, not that it's almost 80 years old.

The film also has a long history of bad prints. Even though the recent DVD is a great improvement over past releases it still looks pretty mediocre and might come as a shock to people who might be expecting it to look great. If you want to see what a great DVD of a film from 1933 looks like rent out "The Ghoul". It's probably the best print I have ever seen from a film that old.
