DVD Talk review of 'The Road' (Blu-ray)
I read Thomas Spurlin's DVD review of The Road at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=42751 and...
Great review!
While I thought the film was excellent, I'm not sure I want to own it. It definitely was a difficult film to watch and dwell on. I think I would like to see it again but it's not really the kind of film that I would watch multiple times.
Anyone else feel this way?

You know, I was expecting to feel the same way going into it. After two screenings, I've found enough intriguing content to pull me back to Hillcoat's rendition in the future: the photography, the use of locations, the condensed faithfulness to the source and, of course, the performances from Mortensen and Smit-McPhee. I think you grow somewhat desensitized to the overwhelming sense of depression -- at least, I have after reading the book and screening the film.

I agree with all this. I find the film highly rewatchable. I think people tend to project their own feelings & mindset onto what they watch. I'm not a depressed person, so the content of the story didn't bother me in the least. I was absorbed in the story unfolding. I found it fascinating and a refreshing anti-Hollywood mentality to the filmmaking.

What's the parentage quotient here? As a father of one, I found both the book and movie consistently next-to-unbearable, albeit fantastic and powerful. Hillcoat's film is amazing, but no interest in putting myself through it again. I'd rather go wake up my kid and hug her for a while.

I loved the book, but thought the movie was hit or miss. Overall, a solid adaptation with fantastic performances, but the ending still felt like it had Hollywood tinkering involved.
