Which Star Wars OT DVDs To Get?

2004 Release /w Bonus Disk
4 Disks: Comes with enhanced version of each movie plus a bonus disk.

2006 Release
6 Disks: Comes with enhanced and original version of each movie.

Would you guys rather have the bonus disk or copies of the original theatrical versions of each movie?

The newest release also takes up a fraction of shelf-space, which comes in handy as well.

I would say get the 2006 ones and get the bonus disk off of ebay.

Just to verify, the 2006 releases were re-released in 2008 as a set with all three two-disc movies in slim cases. So, as above, get the 2008 slim cases and find the 2004 bonus disc.

Re: Which Star Wars OT DVDs To Get?

Remember, there's no 16x9 of the original, untouched versions available on (legitimate) DVD.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's been an update.

If by "16x9" you are referring to "anamorphic" then you are correct. But the OOT versions included are OAR.

The correct answer is, "Wait for the inevitable, eventual, Star Wars: The Complete Saga Extra-Special Edition with CGI Yoda box set." But, given the current options, the question is whether or not you prefer to have a two hour documentary brainwashing you to worship at the altar of George Lucas's "Vision" or non-anamporphic, 2.0 audio original versions of the films. If it helps, the individual releases includes more Slave Leia artwork.

Get the 2-disc sets, you can probably find the bonus disc for sale all by itself.

Right, I guess I always see 16x9 as "anamorphic", didn't think that anyone else might not see it the same way.

Re: Which Star Wars OT DVDs To Get?

Beware, a couple of days ago, I saw the 2004 versions on best buy shelves sold individually, with a sticker that says it is the 2006 version. It wasn't an isolated incident, where someone pulled a scam, there were several copies, with a barcode sticker covering original barcode.

I couldn't figure out what you meant by this when you first posted this, but I've noticed in Best Buy a couple of times now what looks like the silver bordered 2004 editions that have a sticker saying that the original versions are included. Since they're still showing up (7 months later ) I'm starting to think they may not be a scam but just Fox/LFL moving older inventory by adding the original versions. So of course the eternal optimist in me has to wonder if they quietly upgraded the originals to 16x9. Has anyone picked up these particular versions and checked the originals?

Sorry for the thread necro, but I keep seeing these and just had to get it off my chest.

My local Wal*Mart is selling them too, with a sticker UPC on the back. Looks like all they did was break up the contents of the old boxsets.

Re: Which Star Wars OT DVDs To Get?

Star Wars has got to be the only Movie series that I will repeatedly buy, no matter what. I must have at least 5 sets at least of the original trilogy in its various incarnations. But only one set so far of the prequels.

I haven't seen them, but I'm going to say a 100% no to that possibility. Sorry, but you're being blindly optimistic, not just eternally optimistic.

Considering the massive number of complaints they got about them not being anamorphic (even before they were released), this would be a major announcement from LucasFilms, and the Star Wars fan community would have already made a million posts about it all over the place. It wouldn't be something that would happen where new versions would quietly be slipped into old cases and sold at a discount in Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

I know you're probably right about that, but I couldn't help but think that all the fuss that was made would be a good reason to do it quietly. Announcing a new version with big fanfare would of course get everyone riled up with calls of recall or mail-in trade programs, but a quiet upgrade would fly under the radar of everyone but the most interested. It's not the first time it's happened, so the idea is out there.

Anyways, now that this thread has been moved to one of the forum graveyards I'm even less likely to get a definitive answer.

This is what I did. I'm happy with that route.
