Good review, however this line almost made me stop reading:
"In an era where horror films try to be as bland and inoffensive as possible to score a PG-13 rating, 30 Days of Night doesn't shy away from drenching every square inch of the screen in blood."
The new trend in horror films seems to be to outdo the last film with disgustingly gory ways of execution. (Hostel, Saw, The Hills Have Eyes) to name a few.
What are these PG-13 horror films?

When I wrote that, the movies I had in my head at the time were some of the recent slasher flicks like Cry_Wolf and the retread of When a Stranger Calls, the bleached-Japanese-pretzel-kid genre like the Grudge movies, schlock like Stay Alive and Blood and Chocolate... I guess I have a tendency to mentally lump movies like Saw and Hostel into their own distinct genre, which could be why they didn't spring to mind at the time.
You could also make the argument that I wrote that without thinking it through as much as I possibly should have.
It does seem like most genre movies fall into one extreme or the other anymore, either really bleak and sadistic or tame and bloodless. It's kinda nice to see something like 30 Days of Night that splashes around in a happy, bloodsoaked spot in the middle.

It also makes sense to link to the review referenced, given that this site has multiple reviews of this movie.
