The Vanishing gets my vote. Carnival of Souls, also.

Besides Silence of the Lambs I would have to say Kwaidan is my fav. Rented it about month ago from netflix and found it to be amazing. Their are some pretty disturbing (and beautiful) images in this film which you must watch in the dark.

Yes. Absolutely. Unfortunately, the Criterion dvd of Kwaidan is edited. If you're so inclined, check out the R2, Masters of Cinema dvd of it, as it is uncut, and features a better transfer.

A subjective listing of some of Criterion's Horror and Thriller releases:

Excellent:
Eyes Without a Face
Kwaidan
M
Peeping Tom
Salo
Videodrome (my favorite horror release from Criterion)

Very Good:
Carnival of Souls
Diabolique
Häxan
Knife in the Water
The Silence of the Lambs
Sisters

OK:
The Blob
Corridors of Blood
Equinox
Fiend Without a Face
Dead Ringers
The Haunted Stranger
Jigoku
Onibaba
The Vanishing

Poor:
Blood for Dracula
First Man into Space
Flesh for Frankenstein
