DVD Talk review of 'Columbo: The Mystery Movie Collection 1989'
I read Jeffrey Robinson's DVD review of Columbo: The Mystery Movie Collection 1989 at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=27915 and...
I agree fully with this review. I can't fully explain what it is about Columbo that works so well. 99% of the time you know who the killer is so there is no real mystery. Its also the same mechanic used over and over. Columbo knows they did it, but makes them feel he is clueless. He also has "one more thing" to ask, etc.
Honestly, the genius of the series is Peter Falk. I can't imagine us even remembering this series if any other actor had tackled the role. I am fully engrossed in every single episode and eagerly anticipating the moment upon leaving when he returns to ask that one more question. It is all due to the amazing performance from Falk.
I had worries that after 10 years these episodes wouldn't live up to the original series. I honestly couldn't remember watching any of them, but they were still the same high quality stories and Falk was still razor sharp in his performance of Columbo.
Typically when I buy a TV box set I spend weeks or months watching the discs an episode here and there. I finish the Columbo sets, including this 1989 set, in a weekend. They are that good and that timeless.
Bring on the next set Universal.
