Recommend the best TV on DVD, please.

Hello!

I'm a bit new on here, but I'm pretty sure I posted this in the right spot. I also did a search for similar topics, but did not find anything. So I think I'm covered, but in case this is a botched attempt, please forgive me!

Now, without further delay... I'm looking for some good TV on DVD. I don't really have much time recently to watch a full 2-hour movie in my spare time, but I've found that the 45m nuggets of entertainment I get from a television show [especially without the dreadful commercials] is quite perfect for me.

I currently have:
Firefly
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys - Season 1
Seinfeld Seasons 1+2

That's it. Aside from Buffy and Angel, I haven't even seen any of the other TV shows available. The cheaper the better of course. To give a bit of a window for you, below are the ones I've considered picking up, but other suggestions are more than welcome!

Considering:
24
Millennium
Veronica Mars
Farscape
Stargate SG-1 / Atlantis
Prison Break
The Office [US]

Thanks for reading, and thanks for any recommendations!

--CodenameXen

PS: Animated shows are also quite alright, as well as any genre deemed entertaining!

Lost Season 1. Season 2 isn't bad either, but the original season packed with the initial stranded conflict and politics is the best.

Murder One is brilliant TV and currently on sale at Amazon for ~$18. This is one of the first series I can recall where the story arc ran the entire season. Every episode was a continuation of a murder trial and the events surrounding it. Great drama, brilliant acting.

You've made some good choices for yourself. The first season of Veronica Mars was brilliant and so was 24. The Shield is also great as are The Sopranos and Rome, although they are quite a bit pricier on a per episode basis.

I got a great deal on several Stargate seasons and enjoyed the show much more than I thought I would. It wasn't as cheesy as I expected and it was great fun.

The Wire and Rome are fantastic. Of course, since they're HBO, the price is higher unfortunately. Still...great stuff.

From your list, I'd probably go with Stargate Atlantis. Seasons 1 and 2 are both strong and there's a healthy amount of extra material.

I get hooked on Nip/Tuck.

As people said before, 24, Lost, The Shield, Arrested Development, are all fantastic. The US Office too.

Aside from all the great recommendations here, I'd also suggest picking up Showtime's underrated first season of 'Brotherhood.' Fantastic series!

This has been an excellent thread. Every suggestion has been helpful! My poor wallet... Budgeting is key! I'll buy all of these over time, thanks again to everyone who suggested, and if you have anything else to add, please do!

I'll add another recommendation for The Shield. Where most series tend to go downhill with time, The Shield has pretty much maintained its momentum. Season 3 was a little spotty at times, but still great TV.

If you like Sci-Fi, the first 2 seasons of the new Battlestar Galactica are worth getting.

If you like medical drama with a touch of humor, House is the show for you. As a matter of fact, there's a great deal on the season 1 & 2 pack here at Amazon.

Battlestar Galactica, the first two seasons are great, and while the third hit some snags, I would still recommend it.

I haven't seen many animated suggestions:
First choice: The Venture Brothers, imagine Johnny Quest as a grown up loser single father of two quite stupid boys with a homicidal, Led Zeppelin loving bodyguard. And a butterfly-fetishist arch-enemy. Crammed to overflowing with popculture references from the past four decades.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: can be very bizarre, abusrdist and occasionally nihlistic, but the episodes are only 11 minutes long.

Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, can be like the previous, though not so extreme. ATHF's original pilot was originally a part of SG:CTC.

In no particular order:

24
Band of Brothers (a mini-series, but probably the best mini-series ever)
Lost
The Wire (probably my favorite cop drama of all time)
The Shield (this was a blind buy for me, but I haven't watched anything else for 3 weeks. I'm almost through season 3. )
Supernatural (another blind buy, but if you like sci-fi or horror it's pretty good)
Stargate Atlantis
The 4400

I would like to 'third' Band of Brothers It's one of the best series I've ever watched.

As for suggestions, I recommend Wonderfalls. It's only 13 episodes but it is *so* worth it.

Some of my favorites

Miracles (all episodes in 1 box) recently seen at Dollar Generals for $10.00 for the set. Good short-lived show about investigating the paranormal.
Northern Exposure
Sliders
Wonderfalls

If you like Westerns:
The Young Riders
Magnificent Seven S1 & S2 are cheap right now on Amazon.
The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr.
Alias Smith and Jones

Lots of good TV on DVD out there! I am with you too, nice to have options for when you don't have time for a full-length movie.

I'll recommend two series I'm currently "catching up with" on DVD (post-SOPRANOS syndrome!) and enjoying the hell out of:

The Dead Zone

Rescue Me
