Fellini: Where Do I Go Next?

I'm somewhat of a late-arrival to Federico Fellini, having seen only La Dolce Vita, and 8 1/2. I own both of these on DVD, and I'm now wondering which of his films I should visit next.

Thanks.

Rome Open City (screenwriter)
I Vitelloni
La strada
Nights of Cabiria (highly recommended)
Toby Dammit (highly recommended)
Juliet of the Spirits
Fellini Satyricon
Roma
Amarcord (highly recommended)

Those films, along with the two that you have already seen, represent the "core Fellini" works. There are a couple of others that could be included, but they do not have quite the consensus that applies to the preceding nine. I would probably recommend Nights of Cabiria as the next one to view after La Dolce vita and 8 1/2.

I largely agree with starecase, but I think if you're going from La Dolce Vita to 8 1/2, the next logical progression is to go straight to Juliet of the Spirits. Those three movies form a sort of thematic trilogy. Juliet is Fellini's apology to his wife for the mid-life crisis depicted in those other two.

I would say to check out the earlier masterpieces with Giulietta Masina (his wife): La Strada and Night of Cabiria. Though you can't wrong with any of the movies suggested. I just think it would be good to see Masina's earlier career defining roles before seeing her in Juliet of the Spirits.

Another recommend for La Strada - excellent and very accessible.

"And the Ship Sails On".
"The White Sheik".

My least favorite is "La Dolce Vita".

I'd recommend 'Satyricon.'

IMO, it's his third best film, and the DVD is available for about $10.

City Of Women is fun, fun, fun. Not quite as serious minded as his other films.
Amarcord is a very good place to go next. Leave Ginger & Fred and And The Ship Sails on for last.
