DVD Talk review of 'The Harry Smith Project Live'
I read Jamie S. Rich's DVD review of The Harry Smith Project Live at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=24788 and...
It looks like a great set - but the price and pictures are of the 1 disc version not the 4 disc set that is considerably more expensive.

yeah, I was just looking at that. Amazon has it for $54.
It doesn't look like Deep Discount has the box set.
I saw David Johansen and The Harry Smiths in concert and this collection looks fantastic.

I bought the set a couple weeks back, as I'd been looking for a bootleg of the UCLA show since I heard about the show (several weeks after it actually happened). If you're into the Anthology, it's a pretty good purchase. The documentary is pretty good on its own, the concert film is as good as your average concert film, and the two CDs are good on their own. It somehow adds up to a $50 value.
I'd disagree with the reviewer/comicbook guy with regard to David Thomas, whose contributions to the DVD and CDs are among the best things on the set. If you buy into the theory that these songs in some way reveal an old, weird, alternate America, his performances are certainly not out of place. And, generally, the project is at its best when the performers are trying to make the songs their own rather than trying to replicate what's on the original anthology or buying into any of that folk revival stuff*. So, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, SY & Roswell Rudd, and David Thomas (with a Van Dykes arrangement) were all highlights for me...

I took the reviewer's comments about David Thomas with a grain of salt. I am a huge fan (also because I'm from Cleveland where his roots are), and I know that some people just can't stand him. But this looks like a must collection for me. Thanks!
