DVD Talk review of 'Night Watch'

I read Ian Jane's DVD review of Night Watch at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=22101 and...

For people who watch this movie and hate or love it, I just want to add that this movie should not be regarded as totally incomplete or that confusing, because the sequel DAY WATCH ties everything together. In fact, NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH are basically one movie, split in half. So, watch DAY WATCH and everything will merge better and be much more appreciated. NIGHT WATCH is really only ACT 1 and the beginning of ACT 2. DAY WATCH is only the end of ACT 2 and ACT 3. Simple as that.
Remember what would EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, MATRIX RELOADED, or THE TWO TOWERS be without their following movies? They would be incomplete and be considered less of a respectable movie.

If you're saying that Day Watch is Acts 2 *and* 3, you are wrong. Day Watch is the second film in the trilogy, not a mere sequel. Other than that, I agree with your point- one film in a series should not necessarily be judged on its own as "incomplete" when it's obvious that there's more on the way.

Day Watch is the second film but is based on parts 2 and 3 of the Night Watch novel, it isn't an adaptation of the 2nd book called Day Watch.

Well, that's weird. Thanks for the info.

So is the third movie based on Day Watch, or what? Is there any news of those novels getting translated?

oh I didn't know that... as for Day Watch the movie, I thought it was much better than Night Watch. Can't wait to see the final film in the trilogy: Dusk Watch

listen. THERE IS NO SEQUEL TO DAY WATCH!!!! This trilogy story going around was floating around and in the works only before FOX got involved. Since FOX got involved, they told the director to sum up everything in DAY WATCH, that's why the movie was delayed even longer in Russia for reshoots, and thus, there won't be another sequel to DAY WATCH. Everything is over with and done with at the end of DAY WATCH. If they made a sequel to DAY WATCH, it would have nothing to do with the characters in NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH. The only realistic gossip circling around all this is that there could be a PREQUEL, which is supposedly called DUSK WATCH.

There are many books and many sequel books which is a whole different story, but the movies are not following the books exactly. The cinematic NIGHT WATCH trilogy will only be two movies and no more are needed, especially after the masterpiece DAY WATCH.

Don't base DUSK WATCH assumptions based on an IMDB listing that was last updated 2004, before FOX got involved....just order the ntsc all-region of DAY WATCH online and see for oneself.

I'm not basing any assumptions on IMDb. I'm basing them on the original trailer for Night Watch which said it's part of a trilogy. Now get that stick out of your ass.

To answer BuddhaWake's question, this edition has both the US Theatrical cut of Night Watch (the dub) and the Russian complete version (subtitled) on a single dual sided dvd.

MIFUNERAL, I wasn't talking about IMDB to you, I was talking about IMDB in general to anyone reading. And second, you should watch your language especially when you are the one that started with your little aggresive "You are wrong comment" and how you are throwing out false information to everyone here.

Furthermore, this FOX Region 1 NTSC DVD edition is the theatrical American cut for BOTH RUSSIAN version and ENGLISH DUB version. The only difference between the two are the subtitles. If you want the complete non-cut RUSSIAN version, then seek out the original RUSSIAN DVD of NIGHT WATCH.

TODDLEY666666 stop using caps lock for emphasis. It's annoying.

Also, do you have confirmation that this upcoming disc does not have the complete Russian version? I'm curious about that. It doesn't seem like it would make sense for them to edit the subbed version. Was the subbed version even put in theaters in the US?

edit- nevermind, I confirmed it for myself. I'm baffled as to why the original cut is not available, but whatever.

Were there big differences between the two (besides the subtitles)? I saw the subtitled theatrical release and rented the Russian DVD (or maybe some other region). I don't recall significant differences.

How cut is the R1 DVD? I'm not sure which to get. The fact that the Russian version on the R1 DVD is squeezed onto the DVD-5 side tempts me to get the non-R1 release. Was that release dual layered? I'd want to stick with an NTSC release if possible. Can't remember if the version that I rented was PAL or NTSC.

I'm pretty sure the biggest difference is that they cut out a character. The guy who worked in the theater (I think he ran the spotlight or something) who had the power of "love" or whatever.

that's right...they cut the Casanova dude who tries to distract Sveta with his charm, so that she doesn't cause more bad luck...It's no big deal that they cut it....The Casanova actor is a famous actor - he's been in tons of b-movie Russian action movies, such as Anti-killer 1 and 2. He also has another funny cameo as a soccer-loving security guard in DAY WATCH. There is no way they can cut that scene though....

I liked Night Watch, but didn't love it-maybe with repeated viewings, which i think I owe it to the film, my feelings will change. I hope Fox will release the sequel here, in America, soon.

Has anyone watched the Russian language version yet? I keep hearing this annoying static sound in the front right speaker whenever there is a decent amount of action on the screen.

It sounds like it is part of the actual audio track and you can still hear it even when the volume is turned down.

ZODIAC SPEAKING: why not buy the DAY WATCH NTSC version with English subtitles online? It's hard to find now though...

FLASHBURN, I have the legit NTSC Russian version of NIGHT WATCH, and the audio was pretty sweet...I didn't hear any probs. Do you have the PAL version or the NTSC version?

I am talking about the R1 release, which is what this thread is about. I've already seen the Russian release and there is no audio problems with that one.

Is it region-encoded? I have a multi-region player, but I have 4 or 5 non-multi regions that I wouldn't mind being to play it on (nevermind lending it to friends).

Any one have a pointer to a reputable seller?

I have the same problem as you. Took it over to a firends house to see if it was a problem on my end and it happened there as well.

By the way, Dusk Watch is rumored to be 3D as Timur has mentioned one of his projects to be a 3D Watch film.

try for the DAY WATCH DVD with english subtitles here...maybe the stores are selling it, but in a very tricky secretive way. It works when you add it to your cart, so give it a shot:

Any word on an official release for Day Watch? Either in the theatre or on DVD?

I just got Night Watch as a blind buy and thought it was incredible.
