Singin' In The Rain - view/thoughts

Singin' In The Rain - 4.5/5

I found this film so much fun, and greater than the sum of its' parts.

Consider, the film is an affectionate parodic look back at Hollywood's early days and the trials of making a talking movie, (getting the sound right and so on and having a "good" screen voice that appeals to the audience) the film contains a mish-mash of Arthur Freed's favourite songs from the 20's and 30's (there's only 1 number unique to the movie - Make 'Em Laugh, which sounds uncannily like Cole Porter's Be A Clown), the only reason to call the film Singin' In The Rain is because the number turned out so well, young Debbie Renoylds was thrown in at the deep end with perfectionist Gene Kelly, and to top it off Kelly performed the famous title song with a heavy cold.
Still, its not only a great musical, but a good movie too

Yet I had a bring grin on my face when the movie was over - the choreography is great, Donald O Connor is funny too.
Jackie Chan said he got the idea to use scene props in his fights from watching Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire perform.

Not usually into movie musicals, but not for nothing is it one of the most beloved of all time (IMO). I really enjoyed it, its very joyous, in particular the title number (Kelly doesnt mind getting drenched because he's fallen in love with Debbie Renoylds). Loved the part of the apparently ditzy, scheming Lina as well.

Its' been said that Gene Kelly, though the perfectionist dancer and choreographer, wasnt a very nice person, and reduced Debbie to tears during Singin' In the Rain. He insulted her for not being able to dance.
Ironically, Fred Astaire, who was hanging around the MGM lot, found Debbie crying and he comforted her, and helped her with her dancing.

Agreed - this is one of those musicals that even people who "don't like musicals" seem to enjoy. And the DVD is a stunner all the way.

I think the release I rented was the older release in England, not the newer SE, I'm hoping to pick that up though.
The older release still looked pretty good.

It's one of my favorite movies of all time. Last summer, a bunch of extended family was at my grandmother's farm. I was flipping channels and came upon TCM just about to start Rear Window. My little cousins, girls ages six and eight, came in the room and sat down to watch it. They loved it. Absolutely loved it. They loved the suspense, they loved the characters, and they could follow every single detail. The ending was scary for them, but in that way in which they really wanted to know what was going to happen next.

The next movie up on TCM? Singin' in the Rain. Those girls were singing those songs for the next month. They adored the film! They thought it was funny, enjoyed the love story, and really liked the dancing (they both take pee-wee dance lessons).

The next movie up on TCM? Jaws. ...Channel-changing time. Hey, a great movie, but I'm no monster!

There is something to be said about classic Hollywood film and its accessibility. The storylines are slow enough and good enough for even six- and eight-year-old girls to follow and enjoy. I was impressed and pleased at introducing them to two great films.

It's true what you guys are saying. I think musicals are generally lame but this movie and the dance sequences put a big smile on my face too. It's one of my favorite movies ever
