DVD Talk review of 'Landscape in the Mist'
I read Matt Langdon's DVD review of Landscape in the Mist at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=19522 and...
I saw LITM during its very brief run in the U.S. It's been over a decade since that viewing, but I sincerely believe that the film had a normal widescreen format. I own the VHS of the film, and between the blurry, smeared subtitles and the Academy format, I am not happy with the tape, but from other reviews I get the impression that New Yorker has simply reformatted the VHS as DVD. The film is wonderful (one of the three movie posters in my apartment is LITM), and I'm going to hold out for Artificial Eye (in Britain), which is planning the publication of all of Angelopolous's films. Their work is excellent, even if it is (1) in PAL, and (2) with shipping, about $35 the DVD. Yikes!
Thanks for your perceptive review, and I do sympathize with your letting quality issues take a back seat to the many and sundry beauties that are in LITM.

Thanks patherto
Yes, I believe the DVD is simply the VHS cleaned up a bit. It is a tad blurry but I don't think it looks awful.
I'm not sure about the widescreen format. I did a little research and it seems the original theatrical aspect ratio was 1.37:1. I could be wrong but I am very sensitive to incorrect aspect ratios and I have to say the framing looked fine to me throughout the film.
We'll have to see the Artificial Eye releases to know for sure.
