Horror DVD Recommendations?
Ok, I have been mocked before on here, because of my mostly-comedy-dvd-collection. I like comedy, I have to admit that. I do like other movies though. I am going to give some Film Noir titles a shot from Netflix, and if I like them, I will probably buy them.
I do like action-adventure. I also like some horror. I like zombie movies a lot. The more popular ones are better IMO. I rented Zombi 2 aka Zombie, and Hell of the Living Dead. I just could not get into them, because the DVD quality (picture, and sound) was crap.
So what I am trying to say is could you guys tell me a good list of Action-Adventure, and Horror DVD's worth buying. I don't have much $, so I try to buy DVD's right now, only at the 20% off sales. I will have a lot of $ saved up for the next one. Christmas $, B-Day $, and Shoveling $ (Don't laugh, me and a buddy make adleast $100 each every winter).
Or if you don't make a list, and your collection consists of some good, inexpensive Action-Adventure, Horror movies, please link me to it!
Thanks Guys,
Chris

"They Live!" by John Carpenter. Stars Rowdy Roddy Piper as a construction worker amidst an alien invasion that no one realizes has happened! He eventually gets mixed up in an underground that is working to thwart the aliens and reclaim earth. Using their specially designed sunglasses, the underground can see the actual form of the aliens (who otherwise look human) which goes a long way towards beating them. You should be able to find this for less than $10.

As far as horror goes, here are a few that often go unnoticed that I usually recommend:
Ravenous
Ginger Snaps
Dog Soldiers
Session 9
The Devil's Backbone
May
Somebody asked a similar question (horror recommendations) a while back here:

eXcentris has some mighty fine recommendations there in Ginger Snaps, Dog Soldiers, and May. I haven't personally seen the others on his list (yet), but these are excellent.
As for your comedy tastes, why not combine that with your desire for more horror? Especially being that you mentioned liking zombie movies, I think Shaun of the Dead is a no brainer for you. Same for Bubba Ho-Tep and the Evil Dead movies. The Frighteners is a little more light hearted, but combines horror and comedy elements. Also, if you like cheese, check out the Return of the Living Dead and Re-Animator movies. The Sleepaway Camp movies also offer some good cheese with the first being a bit more "serious" (and excellent), and the sequels being much more funny and over the top.
OK...on to the more serious stuff. I see two of Romero's dead movies on your DVD Aficionado, but not the other two. Those are must haves. I see you have Halloween...might I recommend Carpenter's The Fog and The Thing, both are awesome and have a similar feel to Halloween. I'll assume you have seen most of the typical horror franchises, like Nightmare of Elm St, Texas Chainsaw, and Friday the 13th, etc...so I'll stay away from them. How about Cabin Fever (again..lots of comedy mixed with the horror), Wrong Turn, or Rob Zombies House of 1000 Corpses and the follow up Devil's Rejects. These definately show that horror is not "dead" these days. Add Saw (1 and the even better part 2) and Malevolence (awesome old school style slasher) to that list.
I know a lot of people hate remakes of old classics, but there have been some pretty decent ones lately, and it's always fun to revisit the originals too. For me, if it hadn't been for some of the remakes, I would have probably missed out on the originals. I'm talking of things like The Haunting, House on Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts, Amityville. Also, in particular House of Wax. The remake being made prompted me to hunt down the original, which was great, and also to find out that the Vincent Price film was itself a remake of the 30's Mystery of the Wax Museum. This turned out to be my favorite of the three, though the remake really isn't as bad as some say it is. I love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Dawn of the Dead, but I have to admit both of their remakes were great and I had a lot of fun with them. They will never replace the originals in my book, but on their own, they are excellent.
Have you checked out any Asian Horror? These generally have quite a different feel than us Westerners are used to, but if you have an open mind and can appreciate their generally more deliberate pace, the payoff can be very rewarding. I'd start with something like Ju-On The Grudge (or Ringu, but I'm one of the odd few that prefer the US remake in this case) and go from there. Many times these do not have a fully defined conclusion, and we are left hanging with many unanswered questions, but that can be half the fun. I'm talking about masterpieces like Tale of Two Sisters, Oldboy, Dark Water, and Ichi The Killer. Others to check out from that side of the world are Kwaidan (old school Japanese), Phone, The Ring (Ringu) series, Tell Me Something (along the lines of Seven or Silence of the Lambs) and Uzumaki (for the ultimate in weirdness). If you can appreciate the style, Versus is another movie that combines horror, comedy, and zombies...good stuff.
Just a couple other titles that need to be mentioned. Dario Argento's Susperia...this will keep you wondering just WTF is going on, but it is beautiful and somewhat disturbing. It is more like watching a nightmare in progress than a movie. Different than anything I've seen...and wonderful. Argento's Deep Red was also very good, but in a totally different way...more of a murder mystery. I picked up Inferno, which is the follow up to Susperia, but haven't gotten a chance to watch it yet. The French classic-to-be High Tension also needs to be mentioned here. Very, very good stuff. I'd also feel dirty if I didn't mention Carnival of Souls...a classic in every way.
I haven't touched upon your action movie request at all. The Blade trilogy is an awesome blend of action with horror, so they would be worth checking out for you. Underworld is another. As for straight up action there's a million of them. If you don't mind turning your brain off at the door, pretty much anything with Michael Bay's name on it will give you great action. Things like The Rock, Con Air, Bad Boys 1&2, Gone in 60 Seconds, etc. I could go on, but will let others jump in.
Wow...I had no idea I was getting this long winded. Sorry about that. Hopefully these will help get you started.

To add to the horror-commedy movies, how about the bloodiest movie of all time?
Dead Alive by Peter Jackson
Just make sure it's the 97 minute unrated version which has all the gore intact.

Get the Blue Underground DVD of "Zombie" (aka Zombi 2), as the price is definitely better than Shriek Show's release (fits your "inexpensive" criteria), and the transfer is also superior to Shriek Show's. That version you rented from Netflix must have been the crappy old Anchor Bay disc, because the Blue Underground transfer is gorgeous. (Shriek Show's release has poorer color timing and like every other disc I've seen from them isn't flagged for progressive playback... grrr!. Still, it's a major improvement over the old Anchor Bay version you likely saw. Also, the extra features on the Shriek Show second disc can be rented from Netflix if you're interested... they're not bad, but I haven't any real interest in seeing them again.
Other inexpensive goodies:
Deep Red
The Beyond
Shivers
A little more expensive:
Audition
High Tension

I'll second the recommendations for They Live! and Dog Soldiers. DS should be around $5.99 or so retail.
I'd also recommend Drive, an oft over-looked action film in the Lethal Weapon vain, but with a lot of great martial arts. About $6 on DDD. For fans of the genre, it's considered a classic of sorts.
There's a good version of Night of the Living Dead available for around $6 as well at DDD. Great place to start if you're just getting into horror. The Nightmare on Elm Street flicks are super-cheap. I'd go with 1-3 for starters.
Cube has a cool premise. A lot of fun. Just avoid the sequels.
And finally, Dark City is around $5 or so. Great film. Weird, but atmospheric as hell.

More thumbs up for DOG SOLDIERS, BUBBA HO-TEP, GINGER SNAPS, & GINGER SNAPS 2 (GINGER SNAPS BACK). Also, NEAR DARK is a work of genius if you like vampire films...great cast (Lance Hendrickson, Bill Paxton, etc.) with a definite independent feel. Saw the single disc-version at K-Mart for $6.99 (a steal!), but you can probably find the 2-disc version affordably, too. We liked the GINGER SNAPS movies well enough to get the 'prequel' (GINGER SNAPS: THE BEGINNING) despite lukewarm reviews compared to the originals, but we haven't seen it yet so can't recommend it. All the others are definitely worth your time & hard-earned cash!

Wow, thank you guys very much. I am going to start buying Horror films too, not just comedy, and tv shows. There is tons to choose from as I see. Time to dig in. I am making a list of Horror films I have seen, and am going to buy the ones I enjoyed. I really like Ginger Snaps, and the 2nd, not so much the 3rd one (the prequel). I enjoyed the Silence of the Lambs trilogy, forgot about those. I liked both Jeepers Creepers.
I think I should get the freddy box. I know it is cheap at DDD. I have heard on here though, that there changing the films to FS, so its cheaper. Is that true? What about the Jason box set. Is it pretty nice? Good bonus features?
Well thanks a lot again all of you,
It means a lot, it really does.

A lot of great, inexpensive suggestions so far, but I'll add:
Exorcist III (aka Exorcist: Legion) - the only "true" sequel to The Exorcist because it's from the same author of the original, as well as the only Exorcist sequel/prequel that's really worth a damn.
