Live 8 DVD review

Received a copy of the Live 8 DVD set today. Only have 3 of the 4 discs (first 3) so that's all I can comment on. I will update this as I explore it more.

Each disc starts with the FBI warning and then moves right into the menus. All audio options are there Stereo, 5.1 and DTS. You can also choose which artist you'd like to watch.

My guinea pig was the Madonna footage.

All 3 songs are there but the time in between the songs has been heavily edited. Most of her banter with the audience is gone as are some of the camera angles. There were A LOT of angles that differed from the main broadcast so if you have one of the many versions from the UK (which aired in widescreen and I assume 5.1) or the crappy compressed MTV version, you might want to hold on to them.

Also, although it is in widescreen, it is not progressively encoded. It's interlaced and with that come a lot of artifacts and issues with blurring. At one point the camera spins around and it's almost as if it's stuttering because the image jumps a bit. Very strange.

Audio, not so impressed. There is a good amount of bass and it is clearer than the broadcast I have a copy of but I was expecting a wider sound field. Very little surround usage which was mostly delegated to audience applause.

More to come. If you have specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
