DVD Talk review of 'The Seagull's Laughter'
I read Holly E. Ordway's DVD review of The Seagull's Laughter at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=14884 and...
I agree that this is a superb transfer in terms of color and detail. However, I believe the original theatrical aspect ratio is 2.35:1. This DVD looks like an open-matte version of that. IMdB has the aspect ratio at 2.35:1 and if you look through the accompanying trailers and the deleted scenes you'll notice that they are all in 2.35:1. Would you query HVE (Home Vision Entertainment) on that? I've also noticed that HVE has a tendency to crop their films, not like others, to fill the standard 4:3 screen but rather to fit the wider 16:9 screen - take their releases of Claude Chabrol's "La Ceremonie" and "Masques" for example, both supposedly 1.66:1 (and advertised as such) but actually cropped across the top and bottom to better fit a 16:9 screen. Would anyone care to comment?
