French thrillers: "La Ceremonie" and "A Judgement in Stone"

I just watched the DVD of Claude Chabrol's perceptive thriller "La Ceremonie," and Savant's review of it is spot-on. However, I'm surprised he did not note the early Ruth Rendell novel on which it is based, "A Judgement in Stone." The director transferred it from the English countryside to France's for the film, and gives the Rendell novel a clear screen credit. The novel, whose characters and narrative are imagined by Rendell, has nothing to do with any of the actual cases cited by Savant as source material for the movie. And what a terrific movie it is, too.
