DVD Talk review of 'This Girl's Life'

I read Holly E. Ordway's DVD review of This Girl's Life at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=14298 and...

I bought the DVD "This Girl's Life" (Uncut Version). I'd like to confirm for you that the DVD "This Girl's Life" is in fact in Pan and Scan format. It is damnably ugly and extremely frustrating to watch because everything is misframed. You are treated to one and a half hours of bisected faces and bodies. I'll never buy anything from Hart Sharp Video again. Pass this comment to them if you can. Thanks for your initial review and the warning.

This Girl's Life PAN and SCAM nightmare!

Doobiey is absolutely correct - this movie is PAN and SCAM!
Worse, the DVD case CLEARLY states it is Wide Screen!!
I returned mine saying they did not sell me what was advertised on the box.
Hart Sharp Video are now on my 'avoid at all costs' list.
Pass the word along......
Also, the PAN and SCAM job they did on this is really bad. Some scenes have people talking and you don't see any of them.
If I was ASH (The director) I'd be livid they done this.

Ugh!

Mcleath, did you get the "R-rated" or the "uncut" version? I want to clarify whether both versions are pan-and-scan, or just the "uncut" one, before I edit my review.

Holly, I got the uncut version.
Don't know about the R-rated version being Pan-and Scan or widescreen.
However, the DVD cover clearly states the uncut version I got is Widescreen and it isn't.
So, even if the R-rated version says widescreen, it may not be.
I don't believe the uncut version would qualify for a NC-17 rating. Looks like it may be slightly stronger than what you would expect an R-rating to be.
That said, if the R-rated version is widescreen, that is definately the way to go. The uncut DVD is such a dreadful transfer I rate it as shocking! It's hard to believe any studeo believes they can get away with selling this standard of product.
I think the movie deserves much better treatment than it got.

One more thought Holly.
I believe that the original aspect ratio should be reflected in the DVD. I have lots of great 4:3 movies and 16:9 movies. I also believe widescreen movies should be Anamorphic. I generally avoid pan and scan movies like the plague. In very rare instances I will grudgingly give in - Robert Altmans' Ulzana's Raid for example. Sometimes I will buy Open Matte but only when the movie isn't available in Anamorphic widescreen. Sometimes DVDs are just not labelled acurately enough to know what you are getting.
For example, is the dreaded full screen:
1. A 4:3 aspect ratio movie in its original aspect ratio - GOOD
2. An Open Matte version of an originally widescreen movie - Not so good
3. A Pan and Scan version of a widescreen movie - BAD
And what about DVDs labelled widescreen:
1. Do they reflect the original aspect ratio - Good
2. Are they Anamorphically encoded - Better
3. Have they been formatted into a 16:9 aspect ratio resulting in slight pan and scan - Not so good
It's really tough to know what your getting and, when the studio mislabels stuff, you have no chance.
