Yeah, I hated the part of the review of this DVD, where he completely ignored the transfer quality, and how he never reported on the sound quality. Or how he completely ignored plot summary and cast list, stuff like that. Nope, not informative at all.

Tune in tomorrow, when chanster pooh-pooh's Jason Bovberg's "not very informative" review of The Ultimate Matrix Collection because he talks "incessantly" about its philosophical undertones... I mean, it's something that's been talked about for years. So hackneyed.

Think about your review for a second? What criteria did you use? A vollyball game? Two men that are friends? By that criteria, any movie where a guy takes off his shirt is gay porn? What would you say about Rocky or Platoon? Was Rocky a gay guy trying to find a way to express his affection to Apollo? Was Platoon about a bunch of guys who had to go oversea's to do what they could not here? The problem with your review is the criteria is flawed.
Buddy, either you're a deliberate troll, or you're the most incredibly naive person alive.

Have you never heard of subtext?

I recognized the film's nostalgic appeal, and took into account its reference quality soundtrack. After all, I gave the DVD a "Highly Recommended" rating, which is our second highest honor to bestow...

The way I see it, there's nothing I can write that's going to change anybody's mind on TOP GUN. That film will live on long after I'm downconverted to a worm buffet. All I can do is review the disc's technical merits (of which there are plenty) and offer up my own $0.02 as to why TOP GUN is the cinematic equivalent of amyl nitrate.
I think this film needs more bassoon tunes.

Thanks J! Oddly enough, Schwartz hated that line. I mean, really hated it. I responded in kind that he hadn't "gotten any" since the Reagan adminisrtation... the first Reagan administration. He immediately grabbed his watermelons and left, and I haven't heard from him since.

Big Top Gun fan, that Jeff Schwartz. Not gay, though, although I'm sure his boyfriend would beg to differ.

First of all, let me say that this thread is hilarious, I especially like the quote from Sleep With Me.
Secondly, this is a DVD review site, not a movie review site. If you want to read movie reviews, go on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. I think Matt did a good job at reviewing the DVD (video/audio quality, extras) and personally, I think that's all the matters. I've read DVD reviews for other films where I didn't agree with the movie review, but that didn't bother me, I can still enjoy the movie even if others didn't. There will always be people that disagree on any given subject, you just have to learn to tolerate it.

This was my 2 cents.

While I find the volleyball scene uncomfortable, I choose to view this movie on a very superficial level. When I do that, the music, the action, and Kelly all rock!

By the way, I don't find the homoerotic themes here as obvious as in Rocky III. Rocky and Apollo embracing on the beach, all sweaty, after Rocky beats Apollo in a spring. Uh...no thanks.

It'd be cool if we could get some comparison screenshots from the the old/new versions. With the wider aspect ratio I'm assuming we gain some horizontal image and lose some vertical. Right?

I'm not going to comment on the gay undertones of this movie, but here's a review to keep you entertained:

I've never seen a more blatant apologist stance for the destruction of the indigenous populations of the Americas than I did in that filthy piece of celluloid.

Top Gun was shot in the Super35 process. The original DVD transfer had the top and bottom mattes lifted a little for a ratio of 2.0:1. If the new DVD is 2.35:1, all they've done is re-appy the tighter theatrical matting.

Gay Porn?? You mean to say every war movie that doesn't have women, or just a token woman or two, is Gay Porn?
Well I certainly hope so! They've been giving me HO's for many, many years!
Do you thing this guy still believes Rock Hudson wasn't REALLY gay? Or Quentin Tarantino or Kevin Spacey?

I was pleasantly surprised that, for once, the review of the film itself was right on target.

The IGN review had me cracking up.
http://dvd.ign.com/articles/573/573749p1.html

Actual quote from the movie:
"Your tail is clear. You're OK, Cougar. Just stay on my wing, I'll take you all the way in. Just stay with me. Easy, Cougar. Just a walk in the park, buddy. You're a little low. You're a little low, Coug. Come on, buddy, pull up. Pull up, Cougar. That's it. Almost there. "

From the review of the extras
"The discs come in an Amaray case with a swinging hinge panel for Disc #1 and no insert or personal lubricants included. Drat."
