Holly you seem to have above average gear. I know what a Mits is capable of delivering and your DVD player is comparable to mine. I curious if you've had them calibrated by a pro or if you've at least tweaked it yourself. Many of the reviews have no problem with the color reproduction but the picture sounds like it's been filtered too much and resharpened to bring back detail. If your display isn't focused and edge enhancement removed maybe this is not something you'd notice but others have.

I'm sorry I should have been more clear. What I meant by calibration is doing what a pro calibration would often entail. Was the edge enhancement circuitry disconnected? Has the focus been been adjusted both mechanically and electronically? Were the optics cleaned for the lenses and the mirror? These are all things that will allow the display to really show off both the greatness of a transfer as well as it's deficiencies of the disc more than simply using Avia to set sharpness, contrast, brightness, tint and color. You'd be surprised how an RPTV can be so out off focus, the optics filthy straight from the factory and the level of detail that would be missing because of it.

No problem, chipmac. I'm actually not the one who takes care of the calibration - my husband is the total hardware geek, so he's the one who knows the nitty-gritty details. I do know that we've opened up the set and cleaned the lenses several times, and have used the manufacturing codes to tweak parameters of the set that aren't accessible from the normal user menus, including color alignment. (You're quite right - the difference "before" and "after" was like night and day.)
