Star Trek Generations, first impressions.

Picked up an early release copy of this in the UK yesterday.

Started watching the movie, but it was quite late so I only got about half way through. However the pic looked top notch, and the sound is the best yet I have ever heard on one of the older ST movies. I am talking about the DTS track of course, did not check out the 5.1.

I skimmed through some of the special features. Deleted scenes are ok, video quality with timecode bars. Nothing stunning, mainly longer or slightly different versions of what we already know.

But there is a wealth of supplementary material available, lots of scene and effects breakdowns of some of the main sequences, like the saucer landing and the Stellar Cartography room. There are interviews with a lot of the production people, but not so mch with the cast apart from some original interviews dating from the time of the films release.

The only thing I was not too happy about were the CGI menu's, not up to the usual standard, a very dodgy looking rendition of the Enterprise indeed.

Looking forward to watching the rest.

Was there a trailer for Generations included as a special feature?

I've heard from server reliable sources that the trailers are listed as special features, but not on the disc.

Actually, now that you mention it there do not appear to be any trailers, and I have now seen all of the special features. And they are listed on the back of the case.

Not a problem for me, they are never an essential extra, just a "watch once" kind of thing. But I soppose there will be those who will not be happy.

I always find that rather strange...for years a vanilla disc has been out there with only a trailer on it, and yet if the trailer is not on the special edition people complain.

Oh, and this one will also upset a few people...no insert. (But then 6 did not have one either).

Again, it is not a problem for me. They are nice, but they only contain the same info that you can find on the disc anyway in the extras, and you have a chapter menu on the dvd anyway.

Anyway, now that I have had time to look at all of the extras, they are very, very good. I think this is the most comprehensive set yet, covering such things as weapons, effects, (minatures and cgi), a breakdown of how Picards family album was put together, a feature on the Enterprise lineage, features on the filming of the climax between Picard and Soren on the rock, a kind of making of which fosuses on the uniting of the two casts, and a nice tribute to Matt Jeffries.

Length wise these are all pretty decent and comprehensive, with the shortest weighing in at about 4 mins and the longest 25. Lots of on set footage appears to exist.

The deleted scenes include the orbital skydiving sequence, though it's primarily just a dialiogue scene - obviously the effects were simply not finished. The original ending is interesting, and perhaps would have looked better in the movie than the existing one(though some may think that the fisticuffs go on a bit too long).

I'll probably pick up all the SE except for Insurrection. Will they release an SE for Nemisis? it seemed to have good extra's already.

I feel the same way about Insurrection, it did nothing for me either. Perhaps a reappraisal is due - and perhaps there may even be a directors cut that might improve it. However, if the disc has some decent , and more to the point, honest reappraisals of how the movie was put together it may be worth picking up.

I find it fascinating to hear how and why certain decisions were made on movies that have not been succcessful. The best example to date of this is the Alien 3 doc on the Quadrilogy set.

One further point, as we are talking about honesty, the commentary on the Generations disc is also refreshingly honest - The director and writer are happy to discuss which portions of the movie do not really work.

However, I wish they would stop using those big block animations for the text commentary - I know they are in the style of the ships computer graphics, but they are very distracting.
