Seasons 1 and 2 both look pretty poor owing to the 16mm photography and low budget. Production values pick up in Season 3 and steadily improve through to the end.

I kind of liked the "mood" lighting in the earlier episodes. (But they were definitely working on a shoestring budget.)

Ironically, the lighting of the series is darkest when the themes are lightest, but as the show's themes grow progressively darker and more mature, the overall look of the series lightens up.
