Lost in Translation -- good blind buy?

I like what I've seen so far (previews) and a funny Bill Murray is fine with me. Just lookin' for some opinions on this one as a blind buy...

bis22 01-27-04 01:17 PM

Would like to know this too.

RyoHazuki 01-27-04 05:00 PM

I don't think so. I've not yet seen it but I've heard many people were dissappointed when they saw this film in the theatres despite the large praise.

hellrazor08 01-28-04 06:20 AM

If you don't like movies where the plot isn't spelled out for you then you probably won't like this movie.

yeek 01-28-04 10:33 AM

Bottom line is this, don't go looking for a comedy...I know the previews/trailers show a funny Bill Murray...but the movie isn't about him being comedic or "a fish out of water" in Japan...there are some elements of that, but the film as a whole is about something else...I thought it was great, but I knew kinda what to expect storywise when I watched it....

It's a good blind buy if you like slower, character based european films. This film doesn't really play like an American comedy at ALL.

Some of it is funny, but mostly it's a film about people being adrift in their lives and finding something shared with each other that lifts them out of their inhumanity for a brief time.

In other words, it's an art-house film. It reminded me of the Three Colors Trilogy films quite a bit. If they were Red, White, and Blue, this one is kinda Beige.

this movie is more of a mellow film... it's about culture shock and if you like calm films that show a lot of different things about japan then this one's fo ryou. if your a person that likes a lot of tricks and twists to movies... i wouldn't recommend it at all. this film personally i think was so amazing in the theatres it's just all together a really pretty film.

The shot of Bill Murray playing golf , with the mountain in the background, is great.

If you truly love and admire the art of film, then it's a great blind buy. But if you're only a casual movie-watcher, then you had probably better rent it first because chances are that you won't care for it too much.

It's like jough said, it's a slower, character-driven movie.

If you liked Sofia Coppola's first film 'The Virgin Suicides' then you will probably enjoy this, a far superior, work. The mood and tone are similar.

Best Movie of the year. It does have a slow pace but the characters and the story are top notch. Sophia is making her mark already! Cudos to Bill and hope he wins the OSCAR!

So it's like Royal Tennenbaums???? A movie with Bill Murray that is billed as a comedy, but is never actually funny....

Couldn't be farther from the truth. It's definitely not a laugh-a-minute comedy persay, but the moments of humor it does contain are excellent.

Shroud 02-01-04 12:29 AM

I thought of it as more of a cultural movie, the differences between Japan and the US. The opening of the movie is quite good, but it slows down after that.

jough 02-01-04 01:48 AM

Actually, if you didn't think that the Royal Tenenbaums was funny, perhaps Lost in Translation isn't for you.

Osiris 02-01-04 11:10 AM

I was very dissapointed. This was at best dry comedy.

jough 02-01-04 12:15 PM

Hrm. Lost in Translation isn't a comedy. I guess because it stars Bill Murray you were expecting one, so I can see how you'd be disappointed if you were expecting a Caddyshack type film and then saw LiT.

I don't think I've ever laughed out loud as much as I did when I saw the Royal Tenenbaums for the first time. Diff'rent strokes for different folks.

dcprules 02-02-04 01:25 AM

Buy it. I loved it!!! Don't go expecting comedy, however. A lot of the people I've talked to have not liked it because they thought it was supposed to be a comedy and even urged me not to go see it in the theater, glad I went anyways. It's an excellent movie!

So does this mean if Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favorite movies (which it is) then odds are good Lost in Translation would be a good blind buy? I'm sorely tempted...

Well Lost In Translation isn't exactly the same type of movie Royal Tenenbaums is but I would say if you enjoy movies like Royal Tenenbaums or Rushmore you would probably enjoy Lost In Translation.

They can't be compared that much though except for Bill Murray but I think you would be safe to go with Lost In Translation anyways.

cfloyd3 02-02-04 03:29 PM

I saw it four times in theaters.. I just have a hard time not watching it.. The film is beautiful.

Go buy it.

Comfort Eagle 02-02-04 05:30 PM

Its hard to say if this is a good blind buy or not. It was my favorite movie of last year, and really is in my top 10 list. but it is certainly not for everyone. So much of the movie is very subtle and makes you look for things yourself. not everything is just spelled out for you. I would honestly say just give it a rent first....especially since it is not on sale anywhere this week.

I just got the dvd today and I must say that the extras were incredible, insightful and hilarious.

The documentary was awesome considering the 20min or so running time. It showed the cast/crew all over Tokyo and it sure brought back a lot of memories for me since I was there last there and knew almost every spot they were in that piece.

The really funny extra was a longer segment was "Matthew's TV." The Japanese host was a clown and seeing Bill Murray's face when reaching inside a box was priceless.

Jackskeleton 02-04-04 04:16 AM

Not a good blind buy if you think this will be a LOL comedy.. though I have said that before.

In saying that I LOVED THIS FILM. so much that I have already seen it numerous times in theaters and woke up early to buy it on dvd today.

It all depends on your taste of films. this is very much an indie film and with the praise I'm sure a lot will be thinking that this is something that it is not.
