I've preordered but it hasn't arrived yet. Expecting it today and can't wait.

Cardiac161 02-04-04 03:52 PM

I know a lot of people are complaining about the forced trailers in the dvd but I can confirm that the Canadian version doesn't have them.

I've also read that the US version doesn't have the theatrical trailer for the film, but the Canadian one does have it as part of the special features. No other trailer fm Focus Films were included in the disc.

I also think that the cover for the Canadian one is much better since it doesn't have that HUGE banner on top of the dvd cover exclaiming the positive films reviews fm the critics.

Aside fm what I've mentioned, all other features (whether video, audio, extras) between the US & Canadian one are the same.

jough 02-04-04 04:02 PM

What's a good Canadian retailer to order from, if you're in the U.S.? Can any deliver within a week?

peon73 02-05-04 07:47 AM

i bought this as a blind buy because a friend highly recommended it. and i wasn't dissapointed. although the forced trailers were a pain.
it has it's funny moments. and i couldn't help but notice the actress looks ALOT like charlize theron in closeups. bill murray says in the extras that this is his favorite movie that he's been in. so he's very proud of the work he did.
not for everyone as a blind buy. so i recommend rent first.

buckee1 02-05-04 08:59 AM

I loved it but, it's really not a good blind buy. I'd listen to the other posters on this one. It's got it's funny moments but it is in no way a comedy.

DTS on the Canadian disc? Same features?

Cardiac161 02-05-04 06:32 PM

Yes...same features with DTS.

RyoHazuki 02-05-04 09:27 PM

and a way better cover.

jough 02-06-04 12:59 PM

... and no forced trailers.

jough 02-06-04 12:59 PM

... and the trailer for Lost in Translation.

Cardiac, thanks for the info, but one question: did you actually compare the transfers, or are you simply speculating that they must be the same?

(Unfortunately, they often aren't, and it seems that the Canadian ones are usually worse when they aren't. Just want to make sure...)

Cardiac161 02-06-04 05:15 PM

Hi Rich,

Have to say that I haven't compared the transfers between the
Canadian & US version...only with the reason that I really suck at it. I personally do not have a big screen TV to see the difference, unless if it is way too obvious like pixelization, etc.

Basically, you're talking to a guy who, even though has read about "edge enhancement", won't even know if it's right in front of him.

Richard Malloy 02-07-04 09:34 AM

Yeah... small TV here, too. Still, if there's a better transfer to be had, I want it! :)

But it sounds like the Canadian version is otherwise better; maybe someone with a good tv and a pair of eyes can check it out for all of us? Please?

jough 02-07-04 10:14 AM

I don't have the Universal (U.S.) version, but the transfer is excellent on the Alliance version. No PAL ghosting like on the Pianist set or some other Canadian releases.

I'm surprised that the features aren't the same (the Canadian has a trailer that isn't on the U.S. release) since everything else seems to be.

Oh, and does the U.S. version have the French language track? That may be a difference too.

chente 02-07-04 06:27 PM

My US version has the theatrical trailer.

Beautiful movie, forced trailers, no insert.

Dubya 02-10-04 08:21 AM

I rented this last week and promptly went out and bought it. It is a great movie but as others have said, a rental would probably be the best option.

jayson1017 02-11-04 12:51 PM

Rent it. The opening scene is absolutely inappropriate.

I thought it was inappropriate too on first viewing. Director Coppola says it is a tribute to the opening scene of Kubrick's Lolita but there you see toes, not a butt. Actually it sets the stage for the rest of the film where the lead actress spends half the film in her underwear. I don't think it really diminishes this film,an exceptional mood piece and character study.

Patman 02-13-04 11:50 AM

It's rated R, the opening scene is fine for such a rated film.

Oh no this is what I was afraid of. I have really been looking forward to Lost In Translation but The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my least favorite movies ever. I really hated that movie with a passion. But I did like Punch Drunk Love so maybe there is still a chance I'll like it.

dxwwf3 02-17-04 11:12 AM

Well I just rented LIT and I would have to say this is definately not a blind buy. I liked the movie o.k. but it's not really anthing I'd care to see over again. I certainly liked it tons more than The Royal Tenenbaums but I definatly liked Punch Drunk Love more. Bill Murray has some funny parts in this though. I'd have to say give it a rent but definately do not blind buy.

paulallen 02-18-04 04:15 AM

REALLY, REALLY REALLY wanted to like this movie more than I did. Bill Murray is fine in it and so is Scarlett Johannsen but overall? Didn't captivate. After seeing this, i'm convinced that either Master And Commander or Seabiscuit will win the Best Picture Oscar for 2003.

I doubt it, it's either going to be LiT or ROTK.

ROTK bests M&C in drama and action and I'll take LiT subtle romance over Seabiscuit's schmaltzy sentimentality any day.

Hiro11 02-18-04 09:11 PM

Maybe it's because:
I hate business trips, and have been on several just like those shown in the movie (minus the hot Scarlett, unfortunately).

I lived in Japan for years when I was a kid and loved the place. Th film captured the feeling of being an American in Japan perfectly, believe me.

I started listening to My Bloody Valentine and Jesus and Mary Chain in 1987-8, I grew up with the music on this soundtrack. More than that, it pretty much defines what I consider to be great music. To say the soundtrack resonated with me would be understatement.

I'm transitioning from the Scarlett Johansen phase of my life to the Bill Murray phase (except for the massive bucks and the slightly threadbare marriage...).

...but this film floored me. I understood exactly what it was trying to say. I can honestly say it's my favorite movie right now.

So, I'm probably not the least biased person you can find to review this movie. Some get it and love it, some are mystified and proceed with their miserable, empty little lives (;)). Yeah, I'd say I got it.

Long story short: if you know who Wong Kar-Wai is, you'll love this movie. If not, you might want to rent.

That's actually a good criterion to suggest if people would like this film or not.
