DVD Talk review of 'Amateur'
Amateur http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=8286 It's obvious that James W. Powell hasn't watched many Hal Hartley films. They are definitely love or hate films with most viewers. Fans will know what they are getting into.

He came down pretty hard on that film-he said it was too quirky. Well, last night I saw Band of Outsiders, the movie where three criminals break into a dance number in the middle of a cafe (for example). I mean, quirkiness has always made the movies wild and intriguing-when did that become a bad thing?

Agreed.
I think a lot of people have grown used to the MTV style of most Hollywood films. To enjoy some of the directors like Jarmusch, Wenders, etc. you have to step out of this mind set to enjoy the subtle nature of these filmmakers. Hartley is definitely of this class. Personally I have enjoyed all of his films. Some more than other of course.
