Willow

I remember seeing this movie quite some time ago and I really enjoyed it. I think it had Val Kilmer as Madmartigan. Anyone own the Special Editio DVD? I'm thinking of picking it up at Best Buy this week. What are you guys thoughts, and is the disc pretty good?

This movie has a definite case of "rose tinted glasses-itis", so be warned. That said, it's still pretty fun. I haven't checked the special features, but the movie itself looks good, and that's not always a good thing. With all that extra resolution, some of the FX work really stands out where it was buried under VHS murkiness in the past. That said, it's still pretty good.

I would agree with that. It's not nearly as good as I remember.

It's a rather awkward way of saying "nostalgia." When you view something through rose-tinted glasses, the thing observed looks better than it actually is. Sentimental attachments tend to colour our perception of movies, relationships, etc.

WILLOW definitely falls under this category. We roasted it, I'm afraid, when it hit DVD - http://filmfreakcentral.net/dvdreviews/willow.htm

Ahh I see. I too think it's a nostalgic treat because I saw the movie maybe 12 years ago, and I remember enjoying it quite a bit. If only I could find a better price than $24.99 at Best Buy.

My Target doesn't carry Willow. Oh well, I just ordered it brand new from Amazon.com for $15.50. Hope it gets here by Friday!

I have the DVD, and the movie plays as well as it did in the old days. I always thought it was sort of silly, but that is part of the fun.

One has to recall that Val Kilmer did Top Secret and Real Genius at about that time, and those movies have some of the same silliness to them.

Please note that the ending is a bit too dark for many young children, and there is enough hack and slash to almost be as violent as modern Disney films.

My Willow DVD came in the mail today. I popped it in to briefly check out the disc and I'm very satisfied. I can't wait to watch the movie tonight! The transfer and sound are incredible!
