Keep The River On Your Right . . .
. . . well as a documentary lover, I just have to give a shout out to Docurama for releasing this little gem. They are the best!!! Let's see . . . gay, Jewish, New York painter leaves his urban environs of the 1950's and lives with various "primative tribes" -- including a stint where he eats a bit of human flesh. Sounds great -- and the DVD is even much more complex and humanistically nuanced than this. Check it out!

The beauty of the movie besides the obvious (i.e., editing, storyline, cinematography, etc.) is the real nuance that is given to Tobias Schneebaum's story. I mean, it's not as simple as a man with a robust spirit for adventure wanders off the beaten path. It's also a story of fear, naïveté, and self loathing. Just a little gem of a flick.

Oh, and I just finished Go Tigers! -- another great new documentary on DVD with tons of extras.
Finally, mad upps to 12thmonkey for that great interview -- I hope more people read it. Once again, great work!

What am I, chopped liver?
Just kidding.
I gotta say, however, I found Go Tigers! to be really disappointing (although the director didn't think too much of my review and told me so.)
But, for the doco fan, here are some excellent ones on now or soon on DVD:
Paragraph 175
The Specialist: Portrait of a Modern Criminal
Muhammed Ali: The Greatest
Just kidding.

Buskerdog -- you rock too! Simply great work. I hope others are taking advantage of the wealth of information you provided! The Specialist is an interesting doc -- both a study in form and a study of the banality of evil. My current favorite documentary feature is probably Genghis Blues -- surely not for everyone, but it's right up my alley.

I just saw "Keep the River on Your Right". It is definately worth watching, though it was very different than what I was expecting after reading the back of the box (I rented it).
I was expecting a story of an anthropologist who went insane and literally joined a canabalistic tribe (insane like Col. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) in Apocolypse Now). But no, it was a documentary about an anthropologist who lived with tribes in New Guinea and Peru, and probably other places though these were the two areas featured. He had a small bit of human flesh at one point. The rugby players who crashed in the Andes ate meal after meal of human flesh, this guy just had one bite. He wasn't a cannibal (like the box made him out to be).
That being said, I still enjoyed the documentary and recommend it as a rental. Just don't expect a story of a cannibal, expect a story of an anthropologist who lived with tribes many years ago, and is returning to visit them today (1999).
