The History of Beavis & Butt-Head: The Review

First of all, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed "History" after watching most of it last night. For those fans out there who criticized the collection in anyway - be it for shuffled order of episodes or due to the special features section - you ought to reevaluate your thoughts, and I'll tell you why. This is the first DVD collection of B&B that is actually like a real DVD. The first was "The Final Judgement," and that is a pretty raw example of DVD technology - you can't even select your episodes, and find yourself lucky that you can skip at will.

This collection beats out Time-Life's collection in DVD quality alone (I love the Time-Life set, episode-wise, but its formatting is reminiscent of 'Judgement'), and the first disc of episodes included are so primitive compared to what I'm used to seeing that I found myself amused on a whole new level. It's been sooo long since I've seen the first season that I forgot how badly drawn the characters were, and how different they sounded. It was a real treat to re-visit.

The special features section was unique in one respect (and could explain the ban issue), and that was in a 'Teacher's Montage' clip with Buzzcut. The episode, "No Laughing," was previously butchered in "The Final Judgement" DVD by censoring the words "Clitoris" and "Scrodom" when screamed from Buzzcut's mouth to Butt-Head's ears, but was intact in the clip.

I don't advocate anybody spending $200.00 on a 2-disc DVD set, but I was a big fan of the series and thought it worth every penny (even if it doesn't turn out to be a collector's item). But the set is available on e-bay, and people can still get it if they're willing to separate themselves from their dough. The way I figured it, I spend $200.00 in less than a weekend and have nothing to account for it. I often find myself musing as to where the money went. With this purchase, however, I know where the money went, and I get continuous enjoyment out of it.

Ah, the difference is clear.
