Star Trek 3 SE comments, thoughts etc
Picked up an early copy of this one yesterday, watched the movie last night. Just thought I would pass on my thoughts.
Packaging is the same as the other SE's. Only 11 chapter stops, seems a bit mean.
Menu's are superb, based around the end sequence on Vulcan, with the Bird Of Prey on the landing pad.
First off, pic is ok, but as with the others, only a minimal amount of remastering appears to have been done. Colours are very rich, but there is little evidence of grain. There are some slightly dodgy matte lines and those faint boxes that you sometimes see around the spaceships in flight ( the original video releases of the Star Wars movies suffered terribly from this).
However, sound is an improvement. I always thought that this was the first of the franchise to break away from the constraints of the TV series, and up the budget to show bigger and better spaceships, planets and hardware. They really upped the ante on the production values
And the sound is definitely better than the first two SE's, particularly during the scenes of the planet falling apart. Very loud, lots of use of surround.
I also think this film has stood the test of time very well. It's always been considered one of the poorer efforts, with the main problem being the central premise.
But there is a lot to enjoy, namely the hijacking of the enterprise; Scotty's disabling the Excelsior; McCoys bemusement at having Spocks memories in his head; The destruction of the Enterprise
(ok, perhaps enjoy is the wrong word for that one).
Some great one liners, too. "Up yer shaft" indeed.
I have not watched all of the extras yet. I watched the Captains Log, though. Mainly just a series on interviews with Nimoy, Shatner and Bennett. Very bitty, and does not really tell you much about the making of the actual movie. More of a series of reminisces.
Much better is the segment on the special effects. I always find these interesting for movies of this era - pre-cgi, of course. There just seemed to be a lot more artistry involved in creating these huge, detailed models.
I also found an easter egg. In fact, am I right in saying this is the first Star Trek movie easter egg? Certainly the other SE's never had any. Correct me if I am wrong, of course.
To get it, enter the Star Trek Files menu on the 2nd disk, go to the bottom and press right. You should be able to highlight a section in the centre of the structure. This will take you to a 7 minute segment with Ken Ralston talking about some of the creature effects.
Finally, there is a Star Trek Nemesis trailer in the trailers section. I was pleased to see this, as I have not seen this trailer yet ( based in UK) though I guess those of you across the pond probably have.
That's my humble opinion, for those who are interested.

Thanks for the review! This like all the remaining films is a no brainer for me so I'm glad to hear that this one met some of the marks you set for it!

Incidentally, watched some of the other special features last night.
Commentary by Nimoy et al - a little dry, and a few long pauses. Nothing stunning comes out of it really, save for right at the very end, where Nimoy confirms that both himself and Shatner will be recording a commentary for Voyage Home.
Text commentary - not bad, but again not as entertaining as the previous - very little real trivia to speak of, just the occasional continuity error, but most of the time it contents itself by pointing out actors names and films they have starred in etc.
The Terraforming doc is ok, but is the sort of thing you can see on the discovery channel any day of the week. Personally I did not find it interesting, but I would think a lot of fans would find it entertaining. Still, full marks for offering something different.
Fans will also find the doc on the creation entertaining also, but the presentation of this is a little offputting for me, as it's just a guy pointing to a flip chart - kind of like being back at school.
The short piece on the costumes and jewllery is interesting, and is much better presented.
Not the best set of extra's, certainly compared to the previous SE's - maybe there were just no real interesting stories or anecdotes about the making of this movie to be told. Still, no complaints with the movie itself.

Am I the only person that thinks that movies like the Trek and SW movies would be good candidates for fan commentaries? I'd love to hear thoughts and interpretations from someone outside the business so to speak.
The studio would of course claim some kind of legal crapola, but a simple wiaver/release would take care of any problems I can think of.
Anyways, thanks for the review. These upgrades are no brainers for myself also.

Damn, that maked me feel proud, Ven.
I wonder if I could get English Heritage to put one of those little blue plaques on the wall of my house, like they do with William Shakespeare and other famous peoples houses ;
"JFM lived here 1959 to ?.
Verily, he foundeth the first Star Trek DVD easter egg. Respect is due."
