Resident Evil Review
I actually enjoyed this movie...maybe because I went in with negative expectations. Anyways, here are my thoughts:

I'm a big fan of the games. I felt the movie was a let down. I guess because I wanted more of a Romero feel to it and got an anderson aftermath.
I would still recommand it as a rental. but I would really think twice before I buy it.

I rented this last night and enjoyed it. I took it for what it was and had low expectations before seeing it, so that played a factor. IMO, this movie would thoroughly benefit from a DTS soundtrack. If I'm not mistaken, am I right in assuming that Columbia Tri Star has yet to release a DVD with DTS?

I'm a big fan of the games as well and saw the movie in the theater, and enjoyed it. Even the friends I went with who have no background about the games enjoyed the movie since the movie fills in the premise (which isn't that complicated in the first place). Those familiar with the game will get the tidbits.
The movie is probably a let down for some because through and through, Resident Evil is an action movie, not a horror movie. It's not gory, and plotwise it can be pretty predictable. However, it's a fun popcorn movie and based on how it ended (which I liked, personally), I hope there will be a Number 2.
Now, only if the DVD will get to me quicker through the mail

Watched this DVD last night. I've read some good reviews of the picture quality, but it was dissappointing -- lots of pixelation and shimmering. The sound was very good, though. Plenty of low end and surround use.
However, the movie just wasn't very good. Mediocre acting and sub-par digital effects. Also very predictable, borrowing heavily from Aliens, Terminator, Species and other superior sci-fi films.
I'm just glad I didn't buy this one.

I thought this movie had some potential good things going for it - the production design was amazing, the cast well-chosen, and the score was just brilliant. At times there was a definite sense of creepy atmosphere that you can feel when playing video games like Resident Evil or Half-Life. However, those little moments drown in a sea of unnecessary and painfully predictable cheap scares and jumps throughout the film. For a zombie action flick, it surprisingly lacks in gore and in action, and ironically, those are the main elements that could have pushed it from being mediocre to being a very good zombie film.
This is sort of how I feel about Paul Anderson's other movies. Both Event Horizon and Soldier had potential to be great sci-fi films, but instead turned out to be mediocre at best. I can see how Anderson likes the genre and has a lot of fun making these kinds of movies, but it's really unfortunate that he doesn't seem to have the talent to make something really worthwhile. Instead, he makes big-budget B-movies.

I guess I was just referring to the SE titles of theirs with the cover art similar to this one, Hollow Man, In the Line of Fire, etc...

I thought the constant, driving rock score got to be a little much after awhile. The Slipknot video included in the extras may have been more frightening than the movie......

I'm not really a fan of that genre of music, but I really dug the score as well ... my review's now up.

By the way, did anyone listen to the commentary track? It's one of the most entertaining commentaries I've ever heard. Sounded like they really had lots of fun making this movie, and they were totally geeking out about video games and classic zombie films like the Living Dead trilogy and what not. A fun commentary, overall... Paul Anderson also said that there's another commentary track with the special effects crew that was recorded for the upcoming supder-duper special edition DVD

BUT, no matter what, the nude scene with Milla was good enough for me!!! Yummy!
Seriously, it was not that bad. i agree with the lack of gore. But maybe part 2 will be more zombie packed. It had a great ending for a sequel.
