I know I'm in the minority, but I've always felt that this movie is a tad overrated. Does it have some great scenes? Absolutely! But this is one case where the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts. Also haven't seen the Redux version either, but this is one movie I feel that doesn't need to be longer. Definitely worth a rental though, 'cause everybody should watch this at least once. Plus, Brando is hilariously over the top. But this is just one man's (and a couple of monkey's) opinion.

It is a bit of a aquired taste and I would advise you to get the regular release and not the Redux which tends to be drawn out to much and may give you a bad impression of the film! If you like the original release then you can try the Redux version.

I love the film and think it's a true masterpiece by Coppola. It is absolutely worth renting. I am not much on blind purchases and since I don't know your taste in movies I would recommend renting first. You may want to try the original cut first and if you like it then try the longer version Apocalypse Now Redux.

Avoid Redux all together and rent the original I basically agree with what Andalusia said

I think it's an incredible movie and it made a big impression on me.

It expresses so much of the general feeling of that time and strikes very close to home. If you didn't live through those times I'm not sure it would make the same impression. It might seem too distant and hard to relate to. I haven't seen Redux and don't have much interest in it. The original was fine.

Rent it.
And if you like it wait for a Sepc. Ed. that they could make.
They have a HEARTS OF DARKNESS documentary that they should include, a original cut and the deleted scenes from REDUX as extras scenes on the dvd. That is a dream dvd that they could & should put out.

The Redux version added in a bunch of scenes just because they existed, not because they were needed. Some of the added scenes almost put me to sleep (French plantation anyone?). Rent the original version. It's worth seeing once, but I wouldn't recommend blindly buying it.
