Review Wanted: The Winter War (Talvisota)
The Winter War is an excellent Finnish film about the winter war against the Soviets. Anyway, I have seen the film. Therefore I am looking for a review on the disc, because it is $45 at Amazon and it is a little too much to take a risk for. Thus, I am asking you my fellow DVDTalker's who have seen this disc. How is the format, transfer and sound?
Thanks,
DVD SMURF

The Belle & Blade version of Winter War/Talvisota that's available from U.S. retailers is in the proper aspect ratio of 14:9 (very small black bars at the top and bottom) but it's a truncated version of the film and the video quality is pretty bad. I had the VHS version and was told by the company's owner that the DVD was pretty much the same transfer.
The Finnish PAL import offers a much better picture, Dolby Surround (not 5.1), and a few extras in Finnish only. The disc does have English subtitles for the movie.
If you have a region-free player that converts PAL then go with the import. I actually have a copy of Talvisota as well as Tuntematon Sotilas (The Unknown Soldier) for sale for $15 each if you're interested in either of them. Email me at <A HREF="mailto"[email protected]">[email protected] if you want.
