Starlover: Go here and read Colin Jacobson's review. I think he nails it completely.

Nails it to the cross, perhaps. The reviewer obviously hates the film with a passion, going on a hellfire and brimstone tirade on pretentiousness (one word I definitely don't associate with this film), but he shows his mettle by giving a quite honest review of the supplemental material, which he says is very fine.

I absolutely loved the movie. DVDwise, the transfer is superb (better be for the amount of sheer cinematographical skill involved), and how can you go wrong with extra short films tacked on? You just can't.

...fwiw, "America's pre-eminent movie critic" gave GW four out of four stars - but who knows what he was 'on' when he wrote the review?...

Though we clearly disagree about the movie, I gotta admit that "nails it to the cross" made me laugh.

Smog, thanks for the nice comments about my review. And SaintMax, thanks for noting that my opinions of the film didn't mean I couldn't be objective about the rest of the package. Yes, I DID loathe the movie, but I never let such feelings corrupt my statements about the disc as a whole. GW IS a nice package - the picture's absolutely stunning. The movie, though... Y'know, I can go for unusual flicks. I really liked Donnie Darko, for example. But GW...? No thanks...

It is very powerful tragedy with some great insights in child psychology. I sat with an open mouth from the beginning to the end, because the reality of rural south can really kick your ass if you are not prepared for it. I give this film a perfect 10 out of 10. I had never heard of it for some reason when I bought it, but I found a gem that elevated my humble DVD collection. If you liked Pixote, 400 Blows, Boyz N the Hood and others you will most likely enjoy this film as well.

Spoiler:

The main characters do not have the parental guidance to learn the difference of doing right and wrong. Thus, when the boy accidentally dies from the fall in the abandoned bathroom the children becomes too scared of what the consequences might be and then plot a cover. In a sense they are only aware of themselves, which indicates a lack of social responsibility. Nevertheless, they feel guilt, and the guilt takes many shapes in their behavior such as trying to run away, fear, additional delinquent behavior (steal the car), cut the bonds with the past and trying to do good deeds. The children are in the early adolescence, which creates a fauna of behaviors to take action. Moreover, the consequences after the death causes a number of predictable behaviors, however, the addition of the “hero actions” are a great opportunity for the director to display the ambiguity of the human nature.

The slow pace of George Washington is there to give the audience a feel for the low socio-economic status of southern rural community. Why slow? Well, notice their discussions, which lacks depth and any significant meaning. One can draw parallels to Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I disagree with the DVDTalk review, I liked it a lot and as I mentioned before. It is a perfect 10.

Yup, the parallels of a stimuli deprived environment, which is in a sense a dull and boring environment. Do not read this as the same environment, that would be a huge mistake.
