The Last Wave

I remember seeing this film when it was released years ago and didn't think too much of it. Now many years later I find that the film has aged quite well. The cast is excellent, production is solid, dialogue is realisitic. The theme of indigenous people versus the conquering white civilization is a bit of a cliche, but here it is handled in an intelligent and satisfying manner. Dreamtime,an aboriginal state of communication and transportation during sleep/dreams, is a focal point in this film and Peter Weir's direction builds a steady feeling of suspense and dread. The plight of the Aborigine in modern Sydney is compelling and tragic. The only fault is that the ending betrays the film with its ambiguity and abruptness. The print used is in good shape and the 16/9 enhancement is very nice and at times quite strikingly crisp. The audio is very good and will make your lfe channel shake a bit. *** recommended

"There is an even grimmer side to all this: because the studios have discovered how to take the risk out of moviemaking, they don't want to make any movies that they can't protect themselves on. Pauline Kael, June 23, 1980."
