Reviews Wanted: CASINO (movie & DVD)

I have never seen this film, but I love GoodFellas and Scorsese & DeNiro in general, so I was wondering if I should rent this DVD and hold out for a better edition or what? Is the transfer/sound quality good? Is the movie one of their best efforts? Is it more violent than GoodFellas (doesn't matter much, just curious)?

I prefer Casino a little bit over GoodFellas. Deniro and Pesci narrate the entire movie, this may have something to do with it. As for the violence, I think there may be a bit more. This includes a guys head in a vice but I'll stop there so I don't spoil it. Joe Pesci is hilarious in this movie and although some people might suggest that its EXACTLY like GoodFellas, it truly isn't. The style is similar but the story is completely original. I think Scorsese was in top form here. It moves quickly through its 3 hour running time and there are tons of memorable moments. This is my second favorite Scorsese movie only behind Raging Bull. Definately rent it and I wouldn't count on a SE any time soon. They released it with Carlitos Way in a 2 pack, which you can pick up for $22.

As for the DVD, I can't complain. I love special features, but I'm happy without them here. Its nice to have the entire 3 hour movie on one side so its already an upgrade from the tape. I think the video quality is pretty good but I'm really not the person to ask about this. I have read that some people thinks its a bad transfer. It is anamorphic if that matters to you.

"...I have read that some people thinks its a bad transfer..."

...well, not this reviewer, who writes glowingly about the DVD's picture and sound qualities:

...buy with confidence!...

Personally I thought it one of the worst pieces of cinematic pig vomit since Scorese's 'Cape Fear'. But that's just my opinion, obviously.

Excellent film but I thought the transfer was grainy but still watchable.

Casino follows the mold of Goodfellas, but not as well. It's still a good film, but it's pretty much been done before with Goodfellas. Scorsese just took the same actors (somewhat) and told a different crime story...longer. The DVD looks quite good though. And the movie is very good, despite not being anything too new. But it works: good music, engaging acting, but not as good as Goodfellas.

These type of movies are my favorites, and I actually prefer Casino over Goodfellas. Get the newer 2-disc 10 year anniversery edition DVD. CC has it on sale this week for $10. I actually bought it today and have rented it two times in teh past.

Whoah...is this a record?

DVDFisherman posted way back in 2001, and Jordan Raup replies 5 years later!

The putrid stench of a long dead post fills the air soon after being resurrected...

Great movie, almost comical (hey its got Don Rickles and Joe Bob Briggs). Get the SE, it has some cool docs. on the 2nd side.

Just a warning, there are a LOT of defective copies of this out there. I bought one a couple days ago, tried playing it and it froze up during the previews that came on right away. Exchanged it for another copy and had it hiccup for a couple seconds in the middle of the movie. It's going back again, I won't accept one that doesn't play all the way through perfectly.

Excellent film with a nice transfer and soundtrack. The extras are pretty good as well and I had no problems with the disc.
