Review Wanted: Dante's Peak

How does this compare to the other 1997 film, Volcano?

The return of the Irwin Allen disaster flick! Trite, predictable, badly acted, but overall enjoyable junk food.

Though some people think they both suck (I don't, I really enjoy DANTE'S PEAK), I would risk conjecturing that the majority would agree that DANTE'S PEAK is substantially better than VOLCANO (which has its few virtues, but comes off a little too much like a movie-of-the-week)...

P.S.--I highly disagree with highdef's comments below--the sound may be improved to a certain degree, but the extras on the Dolby Digital version are voluminous and exhaustively comprehensive (trailers, documenary, storyboards, isolated film score, etc., etc., etc.) Go with the DTS version and you'll be missing out on a lot.

EDITED TO ADD THE P.S. AND TO CHANGE THE HASTILY-TYPED LINE "I like really enjoy DANTE'S PEAK" SO I DON'T SOUND LIKE A VALLEY GIRL...

Dante's Peak is terrific!

Dante's Peak is terrific.
Don't even waste your time with the Tommy Lee
Jones' flick! Make sure that you pick up the DTS edition,
as the sound on this disc is breathtaking.
Sure the DD edition has special supplements,
but the DTS version has far better sound.

A MUST OWN!

Short and to the point, but very true. Dante's Peak is junk food, but good junk food.

Dante's Peak is okay if you like soap operas. I think Volcano was
better.

Volcano was WAY over-done. The kind of film where everyone's yelling non-stop. The earthquake sequence was good, but the rest of the drama got irritating - I won't go into that comment from the dubbed little kid about "everyone looking the same".
They do, however, have fun with all the LA landmarks, but the movie just irritated the lava out of me.
I enjoyed Dante's Peak much more - the lush, woodsy setting and the two lead actors were good and the effects I liked a lot better. The eruption of the lead villian (!) is much more effective too - love that shot of the mountain when the first eruption happens.

I liked it, it is not a film for deep dialouges, but it has a suspense factor with decent acting that kept me watching the whole film. Compare to Volcano (which I also liked), Dante's Peak is much better.
