i've seen a few reviews in papers-all good-but has anyone seen it? is it good to buy or just worth a rental...in your opinion?

I saw this film in the theatre. The next night I went o blockbuster and saw the DVD on the shelf. Go figure.

Anyway, overall, the film was good. The settings were beautiful, the acting was good, and the screenplay and story were both good. The one thing abut this movie is the pacing. Though the film was good, it is rather slow. That is okay, if you are in the mood for a good movie, and nothing more. Entertainment value is not extremely high on this one. For me, the film is definately a renter: a good movie, and worth seeing, thoughre-watchability is minimal.

I agree - rental only. Story is over the top convoluted melodrama,scenery and photography very nice. Audio good,5.1. Acting good although I thought Wes Bentley(?) severely miscast. No extras to speak of.

Definately worth a rental but nothing more.....

I bought the dvd sight unseen because by the time the movie was released here in Philadelphia, the dvd release was only 2 months away, so I decided to just get the dvd. I have to agree with the others and suggest renting it first. I read the book that the story was based on in high school (The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy) and just don't think that the film did the original story the justice that it could have. There are a lot of things I did like about the film, and I recommend it, but I think most people would rather rent this than own it.
