From: Right now, my location is DVDTalk, but then again, you should already know that, shouldn't you?
The video and audio on the Special Edition are so much better than the 1997 barebones release, it's not even funny... The extras are pretty sweet, too (though I could have done without the music videos, personally)...

When I did own this DVD I would only ever think of using the opening scene as demo material. I eventually dumped it because the film itself just gets weaker and weaker with every viewing.

I've been surprised by this title. I find I like it enough to watch far more often than I had initially thought. Although the story is inane, the action, details, humor, and the lead actors in this make it easily watchable. Also, many people who visit seem to enjoy popping this one in during a visit... as it's so breezy, even while walking around and talking it's an easy film to follow.
The de Bont commentary is interesting only in filmmaking details, not the special effects. If anything, de Bont seems to be only slightly less clueless as to the making of the Twister special effects than a casual watcher might be. But he offers tremendous details on the filming challenges in the movie related to the special effects and the extensive location shooting. It's really amazing how much manipulation that is done to a movie these days.
I make no claims to being an audiophile, but to my amateur ears the sound mix on this one is great. While the openning sequence is particular enveloping, I find that the later sequences are just as rich and commanding, scaling with the force of the twisters, it is as if the sound mix follows the logic that the depth and strength in the mix should map to the magnitude of the twisters presented in the film. I particular like the mix at times when non-Twister items like explosions or crashes are dwarfed by the twisters, this subtle choice for me makes the twisting cones all that more menacing. I can't imagine it any other way.

anyway, i agree with you beebs, i watched it yesterday on a copied VHS tape (gah!) i did myself several years ago and i definitely find it one of the better "mindless fun" films. yes the plot and acting is secondary to the action and special effects but it's not laughably bad as some "mindless fun" films are.. and watching a pan&scan shitty old VHS tape is just WRONG even though i don't have a huge tv or kickass surround audio.
anyway, thank you all for the opinions! i've placed my order!
