...it's -possibly- not at all what you -probably- think it is... but, then, one should never assume, should one ! ?

I love it, but I am a German Expressionist fan, and very much admire the director of SOTV, Elias Merhige. I also dig Willem Dafoe in all his incarnations. So you could say that I am a 'captive audience.'
The mix of genres and the deliberate spareness of the film will be off-putting to some people. I would recommend a rental first.
The commentary by Merhige is very good, IMO. Not so much an exploration of the day-by-day production anectodes but a discussion of the metaphors and ideas inherent in the movie--I like that more than "you should have seen what Willem did with his nails that day."

Shadow is one of the few important films of 2000. Like someone already mentioned, it's not what a modern viewer would possibly expect (slow, restrained etc) but if you're ino that kind of cinema you'll probably enjoy it. And video/audio wise, it's what you'd probably expect from a recent release.

I was going to buy this site unseen last week, but wifey wanted Vertical Limit
Last time she shops with me (I hope). I loved the trailer for this movie..."You destroyed my photographer!..."
I'll pick it up soon...

VAMPIRES need only reply...
Let me say, upfront, that I thought that the
trailer for SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE was intriguing.
Even the concept was interesting; the making of
one of horror's most inspiring efforts to ever
grace the genre. Then why the hell is the execution
of this film equivalent to watching paint dry?
The performances are top-notch and the look of the
film is extremely accurate to the period. Honestly,
Willem Dafoe should have bagged the Oscar for his
portrayal of the vampire. John Malkovich is wonderful
as usual. The film on the other hand is lackluster
at best.
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE is definitely worth a look,
but like most vampires, the experience will probably
leave you feeling drained.

Well, nearly two months after first asking for a review, I finally watched Shadow of the Vampire tonight....
I really liked it. Willem Dafoe and John Malkovich were great! It's not the kind of movie that I would probably normally watch, but then again, I do have some kind of sadistic fetish for vampires and vampire movies....so maybe it is the kind of movie I would normally watch....

I knew it was going to be a slow paced film, but it went much quicker then I thought. I really enjoyed the film, but it's not one that would have good replay value for me.
The scenes with Dafoe were very engaging and moved the film along very quickly. Before I knew it is was over.

My 2 cents tell me that this was a much better film that I anticipated, I should mention that I did not even know who was in it until I began watch it. Why did I get it? I was bored and need something to do before I could go out on Thursday night at the beginning of the summer, when I still had one week left of college.
Happy that I got it. Everything else has been said.

Scientists as movie makers caught me. While watching the
dvd though. If there were Vampires, what did they really think of the movie. I bet not much. Anyways...
Something was just not right with this film. Its ok, but nothing more. I would not want to view this again for a long time is all.

I have very mixed feelings about this film. To me the acting, sets and photography were quite good, while the idea for the story was interesting and imaginative. However, I was very disappointed with the last ten minutes of the film.
It's my opinion that this film had tremendous potential. I always consider it an artistic waste when a movie fails to reach the heights it could have for want of a small number of unfortunately thought out moments.

One word: BORING!!! Totally unimaginative execution given the premise. Poor performances except for Dafoe (and I normally don't like him). Trust me, the person who made this has absolutely no clue as to what German expressionism is all about.

Did you totally miss the point of the entire film? It's not supposed to be a mockumentary about F.W. Murnau and Fritz Lang crying "Ach, Idiot!" at the top of their lungs and whipping their actors with a cat-o-nine tails.

Well, obviously you've never really seen any German expression, so I can't explain it to you. If you had you wouldn't be praising this tripe. Actually, at times I thought it was a 'mockumentary' as it had absolutely nothing to do with the people who created the original 'Nosferatu'. And I did expect Malkovich to exclaim 'Ach, idiot!' at any moment considering his poor performance. It's too bad, he used to be a good actor when he wasn't so full of himself.

No, you're right of course. I've never seen any Dreyer, Lang, Murnau, Epstein...none of them dudes...I'm not worthy to talk to you! How foolish of me!
*sniff, sniff* it's smelling a bit trollish around here...
